All life forms evolve and continue evolving from earlier species, and these life forms include human beings. Most biological scientists concur that the earliest life forms on Earth evolved from chance natural occurrences approximately 3.2 to 4 billion years ago. They agree that evidence for evolution comes from fossil records of change, the chemical and structural similarities of related life forms, recorded genetic changes in living organisms across many generations (O'Neill), and the geographic distribution of related species.
It is widely held by evolutionists that evolution continues to occur today, although the specific evolutionary paths of some species remain speculative. A great deal has been added to the body of knowledge on evolution since the nineteenth century, including the identification of multiple mechanisms — such as Charles Darwin's concept of natural selection, Gregor Mendel's genetic inheritance experiments, and important twentieth-century discoveries — that can operate independently or in concert to produce evolutionary change (O'Neill).
Scientific Evidence for Evolution
Fossil remains of animals and plants preserved in sedimentary rock deposits serve as records of past changes occurring through time and of the numerous varieties of living things. They also suggest that apparent gaps or missing links in the evolutionary record are due to incomplete data rather than to flaws in the theory itself (O'Neill).
Living things share the same basic chemical and structural characteristics. Highly complex organisms with billions of cells evolved from single-celled organisms through cell division (O'Neill). A further line of evidence is that 99% of the proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and other molecules of living things are composed of only 6 of the 92 most common elements, and that organisms inherit specific genetic combinations from their parents.
Most remarkably, the numerous types of proteins found in living things are composed of only 20 kinds of amino acids and share a single DNA code, attesting to the basic molecular unity of life. Furthermore, living things obtain energy for growth, repair, and reproduction either directly from sunlight through photosynthesis or indirectly by consuming green vegetation or other organisms that feed on such vegetation.
Vertebrates — animals with internal skeletons — share the same types of body structures, inherited from a common ancestor (O'Neill). Examples include human arms, the forelegs of dogs and cats, birds' wings, and the flippers of whales and seals. These anatomical similarities strongly suggest shared ancestry or evolution driven by similar natural processes (O'Neill).
Genetic changes also accumulate across generations. When a given population of organisms cannot tolerate large-scale genetic shifts, those individuals die or become extinct. Charles Darwin observed, however, that certain individuals survive environmental crises and reproduce (O'Neill), passing new genetic combinations to subsequent generations.
Finally, major isolated regions have been observed to develop their own distinct plant and animal communities. Notable examples include Australia's more than 100 species of kangaroos, koalas, and other marsupials, and the absence of native land mammals in Hawaii and New Zealand (O'Neill). This geographic distribution of living species constitutes an additional line of evidence for evolution.
The Creationist Position
Creationism supporters uphold the Biblical account in Genesis, according to which God created the world in a single act approximately 6,000 years ago and that animals today retain the same forms they had at the moment of creation (youdebate.com).
It has been noted that creationism as an organized movement developed only in the twentieth century (Bakke 2000), when religiously committed groups feared that evolutionary theory would undermine the Bible as an infallible account of the world's and humanity's origins. Most people regard religion as grounded in faith rather than empirical fact, and anything that concretely disproves the creation account — as Creationists understand it — threatens the entire foundation of their religious worldview. While evolutionary theory concerns itself solely with how life on Earth has changed and diversified since the first life form appeared, Creationists have contested more than one aspect of that theory: first, the claim that humans and apes share a common ancestor (Bakke); then, the meaning of the word "theory" as used in science; and later, the concept of evolution itself. More recently, the Pope issued a statement indicating that evolution is not, in fact, in conflict with the Church's teaching on creation.
It must also be noted that the evolution theory, as a scientific theory, is not a mere guess or speculation. It is a well-developed framework supported by substantial empirical and demonstrable evidence.
