This paper presents a structured personal leadership development plan aimed at progressing from a Healthcare Manager to Director of Healthcare. It outlines short- and long-term career goals, a step-by-step action plan for building leadership capacity, and a definition of professional success centered on improving patient outcomes. The plan also addresses developmental needs, including the role of advanced education, volunteerism with veteran service members, professional association membership, and continuing education. Finally, it identifies five core competencies requiring improvement — stakeholder engagement, mutual trust, ethical standards, healthcare economics, and information discernment — drawing on ACHE frameworks and relevant healthcare management literature.
My short-term career goal is to become a Healthcare Manager, while my long-term career goal is to advance to the role of Director of Healthcare. To achieve these goals, I aim to pursue advanced education and obtain the right certifications in order to increase my knowledge, skills, and competency level within the healthcare field.
My definition of success centers on realizing meaningful achievements in addressing patient needs, with the intention of improving the lives of individuals and ensuring that their health does not deteriorate. The most significant aspect of my career is working toward the betterment of patient health and the well-being of society as a whole. To accomplish this, I aspire to assume leadership roles in the healthcare sector.
The following step-by-step action plan outlines how I intend to develop into a future healthcare leader:
1. Creating a change team by assembling staff members with credibility, expertise, motivation, and authority to drive success (Malloch & O'Grady, 2015).
2. Engaging in the definition of the opportunity for investment.
3. Setting out objectives for the desired outcomes.
4. Designing an intervention strategy.
5. Developing a plan to test the effectiveness of the intervention strategy.
6. Developing an implementation plan.
7. Development of a plan for sustained continuous improvement.
8. Developing a communication plan.
9. Generation of a written action plan.
Degree: An advanced degree will support my goal of being promoted to higher levels of management by building on the new skills I have acquired. Knowledge and skills gained through formal education provide confidence and reinforce the essential attributes needed to assume managerial roles at the highest levels of a healthcare career (Wolper, 2010).
Volunteerism: I currently volunteer at a Veteran Service Member home, where some patients are in their final days. I work to encourage them to maintain a positive perspective on life and its meaning in the time they have remaining. Compassion, love, and care are the core attributes I bring when sharing the value of life with these veterans, many of whom do not have family members who visit them. In the future, I will seek out additional volunteer opportunities that align with my professional development goals.
Professional Associations and Memberships: I am currently a member of the NASW (National Association of Social Workers). Looking ahead, I plan to join a Healthcare Association to keep my skills current and well-rounded, ensuring they remain both fine-tuned and up-to-date.
Additional Resources: I intend to pursue Continuing Education Unit (CEU) courses in order to keep my certifications current and maintain a high standard of professional competency.
