Within the context of modern education, a school curriculum encompasses every experience a student encounters under the institution's direction. This modern conception of curriculum covers course programs, instructional techniques adopted for individual courses, the institution's guidance program, and extra-curricular activities. Curricular content and the techniques adopted for presenting it to students are governed by the nature of society, the subject matter, and the students themselves (Badmus, 2002). According to Hosford, as cited in Badmus (2002), curriculum represents a collection of experiences intended to guide students toward achieving institutional goals. In this context, the institution is the school, as well as other diverse settings in which academic programs operate.
Stages of Curriculum Development
The curriculum design and development process covers five stages: determining goals, technical operations, curriculum application, curriculum implementation, and curriculum evaluation.
Decision-making related to curriculum goals is influenced by three primary factors: the subject, the student, and society (Badmus, 2002).
Society. Societal values, needs, and forces have an impact on educational institutions and place demands on them. Society is ever-changing; consequently, an educational institution's curriculum planning team must choose educational goals that account for such changes. Curriculum planners are responsible for studying the effects of societal change when making decisions about new institutional courses. Societal changes that must be considered include employment trends—since educational institutions have a duty to equip students with basic skills—along with needs arising from new welfare activities, health behaviors, and recent political developments. A notable example is the incorporation of information and communication technology (ICT), quantitative reasoning, and AIDS/HIV education into the curriculum from 2006 onwards (FME, 2006).
Student needs. This factor encompasses the student's nature and method of learning. Within a societal context, the curriculum design process must account for students' vocational and employment needs, as education is fundamentally intended to prepare individuals to lead fulfilling lives in society.
Subject matter. This factor includes the philosophy and nature of distinct disciplines. Like society, the content taught across different disciplines is continually evolving. Educational institutions' curriculum planning processes must account for the incorporation of new findings, structures, topics, and other developments significant within the modern societal context.
An efficiently designed curriculum is crucial to long-term math and ESL competency and confidence development. Therefore, ESL and mathematics curricula should:
- Be planned, developed, assessed, and refined gradually and in coordination by academic experts in ESL and mathematics.
- Support learners' ability to solve problems and reason mathematically.
- Be reinforced by high-quality resources and professional development opportunities that promote effective planning and instruction in the classroom.
