This paper presents a personal development plan formulated to identify career objectives and improve interpersonal and professional skills, with a focus on pursuing a career in Human Resource Management. The plan walks through a structured process: identifying personal ambitions, developing career interests over time, recognizing key competencies, collecting relevant professional information, and testing abilities through academic experience. It also examines the academic and professional advantages of personal development planning, including interview readiness and goal clarity. Finally, a personal development matrix separates short-term and long-term goals—such as improving interpersonal skills and achieving a top managerial position—and defines concrete actions to reach them.
A personal development plan helps an individual identify his potential and capabilities, which he can then utilize to achieve his future aims (Business Ball 2013). It enables him to figure out the gaps or discrepancies that might otherwise put hurdles in the way of success (Cottrell 2012). A personal development plan is a structured scheme in which an individual tries to answer certain questions related to his dreams, professional career, and ambitions in life. Since personal development is a process spread over an indefinite period of time, one cannot consider it final (Palgrave 2013). Therefore, a good personal development plan passes through a number of improvement stages before reaching its final form (Management for the Rest of Us 2013).
I began thinking about my professional career soon after completing my secondary education. After taking admission into an undergraduate degree in Business Management studies, I developed a mindset to become a successful business manager. With the passage of time, I kept on refining this vision by making my ambitions and career path increasingly specific. Now that I have successfully completed my undergraduate degree and enrolled in a postgraduate program, my ambition is to build a career in the field of Human Resource Management. This paper presents my personal development plan, which is based on my ambitions and aspirations, and on the potentials and interpersonal capabilities I intend to deploy in pursuing them.
The plan is formulated around the following guiding questions:
My personal development process began with identifying my personal ambitions — what I wanted to become and achieve in my life. As noted above, I wanted to become a successful business manager, so I enrolled in an undergraduate honors program in Business Administration. I chose this field of study after drawing inspiration from a number of successful business entrepreneurs from my own country. However, I was still uncertain about my area of specialization. After completing my honors degree in Business Administration, I gained admission to a master's program in order to improve my educational qualifications and move toward a more focused professional direction.
Having studied a number of courses in this field, I realized I was more interested in human resource management. As a result, I transformed my ambition from becoming a business manager to pursuing a career as a business leader — a person who has the authority and responsibility to lead a large workforce and achieve organizational objectives in an effective and efficient way (Business Ball 2013). This decision was my step toward personal development: the moment when I had to identify the skills, competencies, and potentials that could help me achieve my ambition in life (Landsberg 2011).
The best way to identify competencies and potentials is to reflect on past achievements and on the current state of one's interests. I am strong in problem solving, pressure handling, and time management, and I also have the potential to lead others. Accordingly, I have resolved to become an HR professional who carries a wide range of responsibilities along with a meaningful level of authority (Cottrell 2012). By pursuing a career in human resource management, I aim to become a successful business leader. This ambition has also helped me define what "success" means in my own life (Palgrave 2013), and formulating a personal development plan has enabled me to chart the roadmap toward that destination.
After defining the career path and identifying potentials and competencies, the next step is to gather all necessary information to guide the remainder of the personal development process. For my selected field, relevant information includes job opportunities, professional scope in both domestic and international markets, salaries of HR professionals at different organizational levels, and related considerations (Palgrave 2013). When I selected this field, I already had background knowledge of human resource management practices from my four-year honors program in Business Administration. With that information in hand, I was able to anticipate the development stages of my professional career over the next five to ten years (Management for the Rest of Us 2013).
In addition to gathering relevant information and having a clear professional direction, the next step is to put one's abilities and potentials to the test — experience that is best gained during one's educational career (Covey 2004). I had this opportunity during my bachelor's program, where professors provided various occasions to demonstrate presentation skills through academic projects, presentations, and research studies.
Planning for the future is not a one-time decision. It begins when someone enters a bachelor's program and continues until they obtain their degree and seek a suitable position. Future planning is essentially an ongoing process that prompts an individual to consider what career they would like to pursue upon completing their degree. Many students encounter opportunities to begin their professional careers while still in the midst of their studies (Kozubska 1997). Research suggests that such opportunities should not be accepted unless they are sufficiently attractive and directly relevant to the student's ambitions (Palgrave 2013), because premature commitments can blur a student's direction if their career goals are not yet firmly established (Covey 2004).
During my bachelor's program, I received several job offers from well-known companies. However, the positions offered were not attractive enough for me to make a commitment. Now that I have chosen my career path and am in the final stage of my postgraduate program, I am looking for a role that will advance me toward my ultimate goal: a top-level managerial position in the Human Resource Management department of a reputable national or multinational organization.

"Short- and long-term goals with action steps"
Personal development planning is vital for students to ensure that they are moving in the right direction — toward the ambitions and goals they want to achieve in life. I completed my undergraduate studies in Business Management and enrolled in a postgraduate program to improve my qualifications and focus my career on a specific direction. After analyzing market trends and the scope of various professional areas within Business Management, I chose Human Resource Management as my career focus. Now, in the final stage of completing my degree, I am confident that I have a clear professional direction in mind.
