Introduction: Science and the Study of Psychology
Various subjects have been studied scientifically since the 17th century. As science developed, it came to be considered the only valid way to understand the world and its workings. However, trying to understand the world based solely on science is also limiting, because not all subjects can be studied scientifically. Psychology is one important subject where the value of scientific study is limited. Certainly, scientific approaches are still useful and provide valuable information. However, the nature of psychology makes it a difficult subject to study scientifically. The difficulties in studying psychology scientifically will now be considered in detail, and used to show that psychology is not studied purely as a science. This is not presented as a flaw. Rather, it will be shown that it is both valid and useful to study psychology using nonscientific methods.
The Scientific Method and the Problem of Human Subjects
One quality of science is that hypotheses are proposed and then experiments are conducted to find evidence that will either support or disprove them. This is part of the scientific method, which is described as a series of steps that scientists use (Brown, LeMay, & Bursten, 1994, p. 7). The first step is to collect information or data. The second step is to find patterns in the data. The next step is to develop and test hypotheses. The final step is to develop a theory from the tests and their results.
One of the most important parts of this process is the ability of scientists to isolate factors during testing. For example, if a scientist wants to develop a theory on how heat affects a certain substance, the scientist can keep all aspects of the experiment constant except for the temperature. The observations and data then serve as indicators of the impact of heat alone.
To take an example from psychology, a scientist might want to find out how a dog responds to stimuli. Psychologist Ivan Pavlov conducted this type of experiment by placing a device in the dog's mouth that measured the output of its salivary glands, using this as a measure of the dog's response to food. The dog was then classically conditioned by presenting a neutral stimulus followed shortly by a food reward. This resulted in the dog beginning to respond to the stimulus as if it were the food itself. Pavlov used these results to conclude that a conditioned response can be created by linking a neutral stimulus to a desired response (Pavlov, 1927). This is an example of how a psychological experiment can be designed with all factors held constant except for the stimulus provided.
However, one can consider how much more complex the experiment would become if it involved people rather than an animal. As soon as human beings are introduced as test subjects, it becomes almost impossible to hold all factors constant. This is partly because people are aware that an experiment is being conducted. It is also because people can respond in ways shaped by their emotions as well as their capacity for rational thought. The question this raises is how any experiment involving people can hold all factors constant so that results can be attributed to a single cause. It is this complexity that makes the scientific method difficult to apply in psychological research.
Observation, the Subconscious, and the Limits of Measurement
Another important quality of science is that it is based on observation — that is, whatever scientists are asserting or concluding must be supported by some form of measurement or observation (Appiah, 1989). The problem this creates for psychology is that much of its subject matter cannot be directly observed. Freud's theories, for instance, are among the most influential in the discipline, and they rest on the idea that people are driven by their subconscious (Freud, 1991). Critically, the subconscious forces Freud describes are not even something that people are consciously aware of. This means that the subconscious cannot be felt by the person it drives, nor can it be measured or observed by scientists. How, then, can these forces ever be proven if they cannot be observed?
The answer is that they cannot be proven in the traditional scientific sense. However, this does not mean that Freud is necessarily wrong. This can be understood by considering something more familiar: gravity. The law of gravity has been proven and is accepted scientifically, yet it is not possible to actually see the force of gravity itself. Instead, we can only see its effects. When an object is dropped, we observe gravity in action — and it is these observations that allow scientists to conclude that gravity exists. The same logic could apply to Freud's subconscious forces: while one cannot observe them directly, one can observe their effects in how people act and what they do. In this sense, human behavior is the observable effect that can be used to infer the forces at work beneath the surface.
The difficulty, however, is that people are infinitely more complex than any physical object. People are influenced by a range of forces simultaneously — their emotions, their rational thought, their self-control, and their subconscious. This means that even if Freud is correct in his assumptions, it may never be possible to prove that he is right. It may never be possible to give a full explanation for why a particular person behaves in a certain way, let alone why all people act as they do.
