The rays of the sun are abundant in many areas of the world — a prerequisite for solar power — and there are many forms of solar energy, both in development and already commercialized, that can meet the electrical power needs of millions of homes and businesses.

Types of Solar Energy Technologies

The range of available solar technologies is broad. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, these types "include concentrating solar power systems, passive solar heating and daylighting, photovoltaic systems, solar hot water, and solar process heat and space heating and cooling" (Editors). These technologies can be applied at small scales on homes and offices, or at large scales for industry and community power generation, making solar energy one of the most flexible renewable energy options currently available.

The Problem of High Costs

Despite its promise, solar energy faces several significant obstacles that must be addressed before its use can become widespread. The most prominent of these is cost. It is more expensive to generate solar energy than to generate an equivalent amount of energy from fossil fuels in nearly every context, and this disparity causes development of solar energy infrastructure to lag far behind its potential. As one writer notes, "The system does have several disadvantages, such as the high expenses of building a solar power station and the unreliable nature of sunlight" (Woloski).

High costs are also prohibitive for individual homeowners. A residential solar system can cost thousands of dollars, and the return on investment may not materialize for decades. Conclusion

Solar energy is one of the most promising responses to a world facing the depletion of non-renewable fossil fuels, a polluted atmosphere, and the accelerating effects of global warming. It is extremely effective in many situations, but it is expensive, it occupies a large amount of land, and it underperforms on cloudy days.
