That means Tesla must differentiate itself with a pricing strategy that will appeal to the broadest consumer base in the market — the average middle-class consumer.

In the past, Tesla has relied on the luxury brand market to drive sales. However, with investors anxious for a return on investment (Stringham, Miller, & Clark, 2015), Tesla has promised to deliver the Model 3 EV with a base price of $35,000, which would make it an affordable family car for middle-class consumers. This would also put Tesla in a better position to compete with established automakers like Ford, Toyota, and Honda by giving it a "low price, high volume vehicle" for mass marketing (Hardman, Shiu, & Steinberger-Wilckens, 2015). In business for over 15 years, Tesla started as a niche market player producing high-end, luxury EVs — namely the Model S and the Model X, which retail around $100,000. The challenge with these products is that they are priced beyond the budget of most middle-class consumers, where the largest market for auto manufacturers exists. To obtain a larger market share and increase profitability, Tesla decided to produce the Model 3, intended to be a low-cost EV for the middle-class market. Because of production issues, high production costs, and government incentives nearing expiration, Tesla is facing mounting pressure to deliver on its promises, which have so far not fully materialized.

Pricing Strategies and Product Life Cycle

Tesla has lengthened the product life cycle of its Model S, Model X, and Model 3 by giving each a modifiable character — that is, by making it possible for consumers to have the cars upgraded via digital connectivity. Tesla can tweak its vehicles remotely simply by sending out a digital update that addresses a software bug or adjusts a mechanical function. The normal product life cycle of a car is four to seven years, but Tesla is challenging that norm by delivering numerous software updates and upgrades to its products year-round and year after year (Stringham et al., 2015).

This approach allows the company to differentiate itself by extending the product life cycle, which in turn requires an alternate pricing strategy — one that accounts for the extended usable lifespan of its vehicles. That is one reason Tesla's EVs are priced so high: they are built to last and are not intended to be replaced every four to seven years.

Tesla has to make meaningful changes to its pricing strategy. At present, its top three products are priced too high for middle-class consumers — the most important market segment for Tesla as it seeks to reduce debt and expand market share. Tesla has not yet delivered on its promise of an affordable Model 3, and it must get production costs down in order to price this vehicle appropriately.
