Physiological consequences of unprotected sex include the contraction of a sexually transmitted infection, many of which can lead to fatal illnesses such as HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis. Gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted infections present serious health consequences even when they are not life-threatening.
In the United States, approximately 15 million people are infected every year with a sexually transmitted illness (SIU School of Medicine, 2010). Morbidity rates for sexually transmitted illnesses are high overall; in fact, STIs are the most commonly reported of all communicable diseases in some states (Washington State Department of Health, 2014). Common sexually transmitted illnesses include chlamydia and herpes. Chlamydia morbidity rates are far higher for women than for men, and as with gonorrhea, incidence rates for the disease are higher for people in their twenties than for any other age group (Washington State Department of Health, 2014).
Pathophysiology of Common STIs
The pathophysiology of chlamydia begins with the bacterium known as Chlamydia trachomatis, which is spread through oral, vaginal, and anal sex (Healthwise, 2015). As the bacteria proliferate and inhabit the body, various symptoms may occur, including itching, discharge, and pain. Although some people remain symptom-free, painful urination, vaginal discharge, and other symptoms may emerge. The incubation period can range from a few days after exposure to several weeks (Healthwise, 2015).
The pathophysiology of gonorrhea is similar to that of chlamydia in that both are caused by an initial bacterial infection. However, multiple types of bacteria can cause gonorrhea, producing symptoms such as inflammation and, in more severe cases, pelvic inflammatory disease and endocervicitis (Healthwise, 2015). Painful urination and discharge, as well as more serious symptoms such as fever, may also result from gonorrhea, particularly when the condition is left untreated.
Unprotected Sex and Unwanted Pregnancy
Pregnancy is not a sexually transmitted disease, but it is a major consequence of engaging in unprotected sex. A pregnancy can in some cases cause unforeseen health consequences. The psychological, financial, and social consequences of an unwanted pregnancy present added complications and could contribute to mental health issues. Unprotected sex with an infected person can, moreover, cause any offspring to contract the same disease, as is the case with chlamydia (Healthwise, 2015). According to the SIU School of Medicine (2010), almost one million adolescents in the United States become pregnant each year. The high incidence rates of unwanted pregnancies make unprotected or risky sexual behavior a major public health issue.
Conclusion
Unprotected sexual behavior does not need to be as common as it is, because all that is required is a change in attitude and social norms. Behavioral changes will be more lasting and meaningful when social norms and attitudes shift accordingly. People should be able to enjoy their sexual encounters and feel comfortable with their sexuality without contracting a disease.
Promiscuity is not necessarily a desirable behavior in itself. People who compulsively have unprotected sex with strangers may have deeper issues that need to be addressed. Specific practices individuals should always observe include condom use, even during oral sex. Proper condom use should be taught freely, in schools and in healthcare clinics. Unfortunately, even oral sex can transmit diseases, and care must be taken in all sexual encounters, not only during penetration. Education can also help eliminate myths and stigmas surrounding sexually transmitted diseases, but ultimately attitudes and beliefs about sex need to change.
