Abstract

This marketing audit examines and compares the competitive positions of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 within the seventh-generation video game console industry. The paper surveys the industry landscape, including key growth drivers and social factors, before conducting a SWOT analysis of each console. It then evaluates each company's market targeting and competitive strategy, product positioning and life-cycle stage, pricing, promotion, and distribution. Website analysis and financial comparisons are included, along with a review of market information practices. The audit concludes with a forecast of how each competitor's market position is likely to evolve over the following five years.

What makes this paper effective

  • The paper systematically applies a structured marketing audit framework across two competitors, making direct comparisons at each analytical stage rather than treating each company in isolation.
  • The SWOT analysis is tightly connected to subsequent strategic conclusions — weaknesses identified early (e.g., PS3's high price point) reappear meaningfully in the positioning and forecast sections.
  • The financial comparison adds quantitative grounding to otherwise qualitative strategic claims, strengthening the argument about Sony's premium-pricing necessity versus Microsoft's loss-leader approach.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates parallel comparative analysis — applying the same analytical lens (SWOT, targeting, pricing, promotion, distribution) to both competitors in sequence, which allows readers to directly evaluate relative strengths and strategic trade-offs. This technique is especially effective in competitive marketing audits because it prevents selective framing and forces the writer to account for asymmetries between the two firms.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with an industry context section establishing the competitive landscape and macro-environmental drivers. It then moves through a SWOT analysis, competitive targeting strategies, marketing mix evaluation (product, price, promotion, place), website and financial analysis, information-gathering practices, and closes with a five-year market position forecast. Each section builds on prior findings, creating a coherent analytical arc from situation analysis to strategic outlook.

Industry Overview

The purpose of this marketing audit is to analyze the marketing strengths and weaknesses of major players in the video game console industry. The two competitors examined are the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

The video game console industry is a growth industry with three major players. It runs in cycles called generations and was, at the time of this analysis, in its seventh generation, with the eighth generation expected around 2010. Over 64 million units of seventh-generation consoles had been sold. The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii are the major entries. Other consoles still exhibited strong sales as well — the PS2 and PSP among them — but all are products of the major manufacturers. There is also competition from PC-based games.

The economic factors that drive the industry include general economic health. Gaming competes with all other forms of entertainment for disposable income and is therefore subject to fluctuations in consumer spending power. Social factors such as demographic shifts, the physical isolation created by suburban living, and the rise of sedentary lifestyles have all contributed to the development of the market for video games.

SWOT Analysis: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

The strengths of the Xbox 360 are its price point, its game library, and the substantial financial backing of Microsoft. Its primary weakness is its lack of profitability. An opportunity exists if Microsoft can develop eighth-generation technology that changes the competitive landscape the way the Nintendo Wii did, or if it can again be a leader in securing the most desirable game titles at the outset of the next generation. Its ongoing lack of profitability remains a threat, as does the likelihood of a strong Sony response to Microsoft's gains in market share.

The strengths of the PlayStation 3 include its functionality as a Blu-ray player and Sony's established brand reputation. A key weakness is its high price point, which led many gamers to remain with the PS2. That situation, however, presents an opportunity: many PS2 users are likely to be eager to trade up when the eighth generation arrives. A continuing threat, however, is that same high price point. This suggests a premium positioning strategy that has not been effectively communicated to the broader market.
