Communication Skills and Nursing

¶ … real encounter with nursing. The encounter occurred when I first accompanied my mother to the hospital to get her treatment. That day, I felt an urgent need to become a nurse. This is because I saw that most of the nurses and other health professionals in the hospital were always pressed for time and patients, including my mother, had to wait for long periods of time before getting attended to.

That experience revealed to me a gap that I was confident I could help fill in however little way I could. Realizing that the only way I could get to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse was through education, I started putting a lot of effort in school and my academic performance is proof of that. However, being brought up by a single mother compounded what was already a difficult situation. My mother had to go through a lot of financial struggles to put me through school.

Now that I am older, I have come face to face with many financial pressures myself. This has made me appreciate and respect what she did for me. This scholarship would help me to get closer to my dream of becoming a nurse by easing the financial burden associated with pursuing a degree in nursing. I am applying for this scholarship because I have a financial burden. By getting the scholarship, I would be able to pursue my dream career in nursing.

I am ready and willing to pursue a course in nursing as my academics, paid and volunteer work show. My performance in sciences is particularly outstanding. The good grades on science subjects show a passion and a deeper understating of logic that is necessary the nursing world. I volunteered in different nursing homes which I will mention later on in this essay. The volunteer experience helped me gain critical thinking and problem solving skills that would definitely come in handy later on in my nursing career.

I have also worked as an assistant teacher. My interactions with students has helped me to improve my communication skills and to become more relatable, attributes that I know for sure would make a better nurse. I was at first assisting others on a small scale via voluntary work, but with the knowledge and skills that I will acquire from the Nursing program, I strongly believe that my ability to assist others will be increased once I am a CNS. I have worked in Dr.

Colgan's Residential Home as an 'Elderly Caregiver'. Here, I improved the client's life quality and also offered conversation and companionship through contributing to a positive living environment. I provided help and stabilization with everyday activities and also took it upon myself to prepare meals and clean up the dishes. Additionally, I provided appointment and medication reminders and helped with toileting, bathing, grooming and incontinence matters. On top of these, I carried out other duties assigned to me and reported any considerable variations in a client's living conditions or needs.

I also worked as a volunteer nurse assistant in Asbury nursing home. Here, I worked in conjunction with the other nurses in providing meals and care to the aged. I helped senior tenants when it came to fitness.
