¶ … film, Mr. Diegues's intention is to correct the misrepresentation by Cumus of the African Brazilian culture in the favela. Mostly what Diegues has done is to unite the story line of the Camus's film with the complicated realities of contemporary Brazil. This movie touches into details the reality of life in the Favela, it is intended to undo the superficiality of Camus film.By doing this, Diegues has added characters such as Lucinho, a drug trafficker and gang leader. In this film, Dieguise, struggles to restore the tone and focus of Camus version. By doing this, he places a lot of emphasis on the relationship between Orpheus's and his parents as well as his relationship with the community. According to Stam and Spence's perspective (Lecture V), the Western perspective in film has not only misrepresented people from the third world countries, but also their environment. Diegues in this film has shown mostly focused on the lack of progress within the country's socioeconomic sphere.
2. Vinicus desire to have black Brazilians act this play was a milestone as it was the first time blacks staged a play. At this time, white actors who painted their faces black played black characters. In addition, it was a landmark for black theatre in Brazil. The black theatrical organization started promoting black drama and actors and a politico-cultural entity. They sort create awareness and to find practical solutions to racial problems as well as advocate negritude. This was criticized because the black actors themselves were featuring in an idealized African-Brazilian population presented by a European-Brazilian playwright via an occidental myth that was irrelevant to any African contribution.
3. The reason for this relationship was that many Brazilians knew the film was not a Brazilian film. They thought that the film was represented by French iinterests in Brazil. It should have been presented as a Brazilian production given that it adopted its origin in the text of Vinicius de Moraes, the ethnic and the music and the people used in the cast. Most people rejected this romanticism, expressions of affection for the country and more so the mystification of the favela.
