Human Population: Perceptions vs Numbers

Paul Ehrlichs IPAT model demonstrates the crucial impacts of human population on the environment (Liu 283). The model argues that environmental impact is a function of population growth, affluence, and technology (Liu 283). Given the crucial role that population growth plays in environmental protection, it is prudent that environmentalists understand the dynamics and structure of human populations across the globe, how these have evolved, and future trends.

The Gapminder quiz provides an important starting point for assessing ones understanding of human populations and their likely impact. The image below presents my score on the Gapminder quiz.

However, I thought that this trend was more relevant in high-income countries, while low-income countries were yet to adopt the same. Therefore, I expected the percentage to be lower, less than 50 percent to be precise. It was interesting to discover that contrary to my expectations, 80 percent of the global population currently lives in countries where women on average have...

…majority of people underestimate or lack knowledge on the steps that low-income countries are taking to improve their life expectancy.

At the same time, I answered incorrectly question 10, which assesses the share of the worlds population living in middle income countries today.

I was among the 84 percent of respondents who got this wrong, having answered 15% instead of 75%. Again, this points a general misconception about the steps taken by low-income economies to grow over the past 30 years. It is possible that the proportion has increased because most countries that were originally low-income have, over the past 30 years, grown to middle-income status due to increased industrialization.

Citing a host of adverse climactic circumstances and other negative phenomena that impacts the coastal zone, as well as historical incidents where large-scale casualties occurred in these regions, they provide a hypothetical- argument for the need for resilience of citizens of these coastal regions. They go on to demonstrate how, given today's expanded global connection, tragedy can more intensively impact wider swathes and lead to exacerbated damage, and, on

Omole-Ohonsi, (2007) in his study of sub-Saharan Africa confirmed these affects by suggesting that overpopulation of a locality not only damages the environment and sustainability but "feeds the cycle of poverty" (20). Thus, from non-renewable resources to social problems, the effects of overpopulation are large and far-reaching, encouraging a cycle of environmental destruction and poverty. Ways to Achieve Sustainability As previously mentioned, overpopulation is a difficult problem to solve because it deals

The modern separation from the means of production does not negate the fact that nearly everything we need to sustain us is provided by the earth, either by natural or artificial means. The earth gives us all the materials we need and many we desire and in turn she is changed. She becomes less able with each passing day and each lost natural acre to continue to provide. Though the

Human Population There are two primary biological mechanisms that determine the growth and suspension of species: natality (birth) on the one hand, and mortality (death), on the other. Amongst humans, other factors may intervene in their natality factor and these include economics, migration, physical upkeep, and social forces of various sorts (Pearl, (1927). This is due to the fact that humans have a rational capacity that other organisms lack, hence humans
