¶ … Race
Justice Blackmun was largely correct in his statement that "To get beyond racism we must first take account of race. There is no other way." In fact, such a statement has particular relevance in an election year (which is what 2016 is). Unfortunately, in the United States, race still has long-term effects on a person's life, which is why race must be accounted for before racism is ended.
One of the primary ways that race has long-term effects on someone's life in America pertains to issues of health and certain socio-economic realities. A good example of this fact is found in Fuentes' article (2012) when the author writes that "the infant mortality rate of blacks doubles that of whites in the U.S.A.." This statement alludes to some of the harsher salutary ramifications of race in this country. Because African-Americans are frequently disenfranchised and live in poor socio-economic conditions, it is not uncommon for them to have limited access to substantial health care facilities, services, products, and foods. Therefore, there is a disproportionate number of health care conditions that affect these individuals in ratios that are problematic -- particularly when one considers that there are other ethnic groups (particularly those of European descent) who do not suffer from these maladies nearly as much, nor as severely as African-Americans do. The rate of infant mortality between...
Racial Discrimination With the Northern Territories National Emergency Response Act of July 2007, the Liberal government of John Howard suspended the Racial Discrimination Act of 1975, in violation of international law, and sent in the military to enforce new draconian decrees on Aboriginal Communities. In part, this was a reflection of old fashioned racism and paternalism, which was still commonplace in Australia despite a thin veneer of shallow tolerance and multiculturalism.
Detroit has also joined Los Angeles and Chicago in having such a regulation. A similar bill was attempted unsuccessfully thus far in Texas (2001). Responding to the concerns of organizations that represent Hispanics, Muslims and individuals of Arab descent, the Detroit City Council unanimously recently approved an ordinance that prohibits city officials from profiling people based on their appearance, race and similar factors. The regulation also bans city officials from
The novel opens seven years after Gabo's mother, Ximena, was murdered by coyotes -- or paid traffickers -- during an attempt to cross the border. Her mutilated body was found, her organs gone -- sold most likely. Because of the fear surrounding this border town and the lure of the other side, all of the characters become consumed with finding Rafa. These people are neglected and abused. Like other fiction
Racial Discrimination and the Death Penalty The United States Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that at the end of the year 2000 that there was 1,381,892 total number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of federal or state adult correctional authorities (State pp). During 2000, the prison population rose at the lowest rate since 1972 and had the smallest absolute increase since 1980 (State pp). Relative to the number
For the past several decades the emphasis in policing has been building trust in the community. Making the streets safe for everyone requires mutual cooperation between the general public and the police. Without community support, the police cannot do it alone. In this regard, respect as been shown to be a better tool for decreasing crime than fear and when fear is present residents tend to avoid contact with
A judge's discretion can mean the difference between a young African-American person going to jail and having his or her life irreparably damaged or being placed in a program that might have a chance to save a human being. While judges cannot be caseworkers, they can look at the circumstances of a young offender's life to make rational and reasoned evaluations of someone's risk to society. This can be demonstrated
