Obesity increases the risk of serious health complications such as Type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. As such, researchers have shifted their efforts toward studying the causes and risk factors for childhood obesity. This paper presents a set of research questions and variables for a proposed study seeking to identify the causes of childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is becoming a serious health concern for parents and policymakers alike in the United States. Empirical evidence indicates that the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children has almost tripled over the last decade (Karnik & Kanekar, 2012). This increasing prevalence places young people at risk for cardiovascular diseases, Type II diabetes, and other health complications associated with overweight (Karnik & Kanekar, 2012). For this reason, all stakeholders need to play their roles in identifying the specific causes of childhood obesity, the risk factors involved, and the prevention and corrective measures required to address the situation. The research questions below are designed to identify the risk factors and causes of obesity among school-going children.

Gender and Childhood Obesity (RQ1)

RQ1: Are there any noticeable differences in the obesity levels of male and female school-going children?

This question seeks to assess how significant gender is as a risk factor for childhood obesity — specifically, whether girls or boys are at greater risk. Gender serves as the independent variable and children's health status as the dependent variable. Sex, in this case, is measured as a qualitative discrete, nominal variable: children are categorized as either 1) male or 2) female, but the numbers 1 and 2 are simply category labels with no quantitative significance. They serve only as identifiers; the two categories differ qualitatively, not quantitatively (Norman & Streiner, 2008).

The dependent variable, obesity, is defined in terms of the Body Mass Index (BMI). Healthy BMIs range between 18.5 and 24.9, and a BMI equal to or in excess of 30 is regarded as obese. BMI figures can take an infinite number of values between any two measures — for instance, between 26 and 27, one could have 26.1, 26.2, 26.7, 26.75, and so on — which makes this a continuous, interval variable. Actual BMI values would be recorded for all participating children and then compared by gender to determine which group runs a higher risk of obesity. This cannot be classified as a ratio variable because a BMI of zero is not a meaningful or possible value (Norman & Streiner, 2008).

Television Viewing Time and Obesity (RQ2)

RQ2: What is the relationship between time spent watching television and childhood obesity?

Experts have argued that a primary reason more children are becoming obese is that they spend a great deal of time on indoor activities such as watching television and playing video games, and consequently spend less time on physical activities outside the home. This question seeks to assess that claim by examining how television viewing time influences obesity. Time spent watching TV is therefore the independent variable and childhood obesity is the dependent variable.

Time spent watching TV can be measured as the total number of whole hours a child spends watching television each day between arriving home from school and going to bed. Responses such as 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 hours would make this a discrete variable. These whole-hour figures can also be categorized as: 1) less than 2 hours; 2) between 2 and 4 hours; and 3) more than 4 hours. In that case, the variable would be measured on an ordinal scale, because one can rightly say that a child in category 2 watches more television than one in category 1, although the precise difference cannot be stated (Jekel, 2007). Childhood obesity, as the dependent variable, is defined and measured using BMI as described in RQ1.
