This paper examines the illness of dementia, its effects on the human nervous system, its symptoms and causes, its prevalence, and current management strategies. The interest in this topic stems from the fact that every year millions of people are affected worldwide. As dementia is a significant problem in healthcare, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of what that problem entails.

Organ System Affected

Dementia impacts the nervous system, with the brain being the primary site of degeneration and dysfunction. The brain's structure and chemistry change as dementia progresses. These changes can include the development of plaques and tangles in the case of Alzheimer's disease, reduced blood flow in vascular dementia, and abnormal protein deposits in Lewy body dementia (Gómez-Isla & Frosch, 2022; Outeiro et al., 2019). Each type of dementia affects the brain in a unique way, but all lead to a decline in cognitive function and the ability to perform everyday activities. Thus, what characterizes dementia regardless of the population affected is the loss of cognitive ability.

Symptoms and Causes

The symptoms of dementia can vary widely and depend largely on the disease's progression and the brain areas affected. Because there are different types of dementia, symptoms tend to differ as well (CDC, 2023). Common symptoms can include memory loss — particularly short-term memory — difficulty in thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving, challenges with language such as struggling to follow a conversation or find the right words, and sometimes changes in mood and behavior. As dementia progresses, symptoms can include confusion, difficulty recognizing family and friends, and significant personality changes. This can inevitably create challenges for caregivers as they struggle with the effects and strain that dementia places on family and friends (Elvidge et al., 2023). Dementia is therefore not an illness that affects only one person; it impacts those nearest to the individual as well, making it an indirect struggle for many.

The causes of dementia are numerous and not entirely understood at a root level. Alzheimer's disease, one of the most common causes of dementia, is characterized by the accumulation of plaques and tangles in the brain, which cause cognitive decline — though why this occurs in the first place remains unknown. Vascular dementia is another common type, resulting from conditions that block or reduce blood flow to the brain, leading to brain cell death. Lewy body dementia is associated with abnormal deposits of the protein alpha-synuclein in the brain. Other causes can include a series of strokes, infections affecting the brain, and certain genetic disorders. Some causes of dementia are thus more directly understood than others (CDC, 2023).

Incidence

Dementia is a major public health concern, with significant incidence rates both in the United States and globally. In the United States, Alzheimer's dementia alone affected approximately 5.8 million people in 2020. The global picture is even more concerning, with an estimated 50 million people living with dementia and nearly 10 million new cases diagnosed each year (CDC, 2023). These numbers are expected to rise as the population ages, highlighting the urgent need for effective public health strategies and interventions.

Management and Treatment

What makes dementia such a persistent challenge is that there is no cure (CDC, 2023). However, treatments and management strategies exist that are aimed at improving the quality of life for those affected. Pharmacological treatments include medications that can temporarily improve symptoms or slow the progression of the disease. For example, cholinesterase inhibitors are commonly prescribed for Alzheimer's disease to increase levels of neurotransmitters thought to be important for memory and judgment (CDC, 2023).

Aside from medication, cognitive therapies — such as cognitive stimulation — are often used in treatment to engage and stimulate the brain. Lifestyle changes, including regular physical activity, a healthy diet, and social engagement, have all been shown to help manage symptoms. Supportive care is also crucial, involving both professional healthcare and support from family and friends. This care focuses on creating a safe and supportive environment for the individual, helping them maintain their independence for as long as possible, and providing support and respite care for caregivers.

Dementia is a serious health issue because it affects the nervous system and causes a host of cognitive impairments. Current management strategies provide some relief, but there is no cure. Research into this illness therefore tends to focus on finding more effective treatments and obtaining a deeper understanding of why and how the disease begins.
