Global warming is one of the most pressing issues of the 21st century. In the last few decades, the world has experienced higher temperatures, increased melting of ice caps, rising sea levels, more regular and more severe weather events — such as storms, floods, heat waves, and drought — and changing rainfall patterns. We have also observed increased ocean acidification, desert expansion, and greater species endangerment. These occurrences have largely been linked to human activity, particularly air pollution, the burning of fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emissions, industrialization, and deforestation.
The issue is so pressing that it threatens the ability of future generations to sustain their lives, which is ethically unjust. Indeed, global warming threatens food security, human health, human and non-human survival, as well as socioeconomic stability in the future (Cummins, 2014; Justin, 2015). Addressing the problem, however, remains a major challenge, largely due to the moral, ethical, and philosophical questions surrounding it. More specifically, there remains a great deal of controversy over who is responsible for reversing global warming.
The following discussion is oriented toward a climate change conference audience comprising a range of stakeholders, including environmentalists, climate change advocates, business organizations, academicians, and local and state government representatives. It is intended to contribute to the growing discourse on addressing global warming and to influence policy and decision-making in the area of climate change.
The Reality and Projected Consequences of Climate Change
Though disputed by some commentators, global warming is real. We can no longer afford to ignore it. It is estimated that at the present rate of fossil fuel consumption, global temperatures will surpass the 2°C limit within the next decade and a half (Torcello & Mann, 2014). If this threshold is reached, the possibility of temperatures climbing to even 3°C in the following decades cannot be dismissed. This would mean even more intense and frequent weather and climatic events — greater habitat destruction, more tropical diseases, increased devastation of island cultures, more crop failures, and greater displacement of populations. At some point, humanity may be unable to cope with the consequences at all.
While there is immense consensus that global warming is real, the international community has yet to agree on how to effectively address the challenge. The 2009 Copenhagen Climate Conference is an illustrative example of just how complex this challenge is. During the conference, it proved extremely difficult for the global community to agree on a binding timeline to cut carbon emissions. Such difficulties suggest that as a civilization we are, in some sense, allowing this planet to become unfit for human life. There is no doubt that the present generation has an obligation to preserve the planet for future generations — we must stop clearing forests, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and adopt more environmentally conscious practices.
Achieving environmental sustainability, however, comes at a cost. Shifting to more sustainable energy sources, adopting more environment-friendly infrastructure, and reducing vulnerability to storms and other natural disasters all require significant investment. Regrettably, few are willing to pay that price. Although we theoretically acknowledge our ethical and moral responsibilities toward the planet, we are not in practice making the necessary sacrifices. This gap between theory and practice stems largely from differences in how global warming contributions are distributed between developed and developing countries.
Developed vs. Developing Countries: Unequal Contributions and Vulnerabilities
It is evident that developed countries are the greatest contributors to global warming. Statistics indicate that the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, Russia, Mexico, India, China, Brazil, and Indonesia account for more than 70% of all global emissions, with the U.S., Canada, Japan, Europe, and Russia leading in per capita emissions (BBC News Magazine, 2016). Nonetheless, developed countries are the least affected by its consequences. With more wealth and resources, developed countries are better positioned to adapt and respond to the effects of global warming (Maguire, 2014). They have erected flood defenses, allocated substantial funds to flood insurance, and invested in genetically modified organisms to address food security — all measures undertaken in response to global warming and climate change.
Developing countries, on the other hand, have benefited less from industrialization yet are more vulnerable to the consequences of global warming. Worse still, developing countries have the least capacity to adapt, predominantly due to widespread resource constraints. Flood defenses and flood insurance, for example, are rarely available in most developing nations. This disparity underscores a profound inequity at the heart of the global warming crisis.
Conclusion: Toward a Fair and Equitable Response
While addressing global warming is fundamentally a collective endeavor, individuals also bear a responsibility — particularly when it comes to changing lifestyle, behavior, and consumption patterns. Both developed and developing countries must rethink their models of economic development, moving away from models premised on constant growth and consumption toward more sustainable alternatives. Fairness and equity must remain central to any viable framework for responding to climate change. The philosophical consensus, whether grounded in Kantian moral equality or utilitarian principles, points clearly toward developed nations bearing a disproportionate share of the burden — not as punishment, but as a reflection of their disproportionate contribution and disproportionate capacity to respond.
