This personal reflection essay traces the author's life journey from growing up in Chicago's gang-affected neighborhoods, through enrollment in private school and athletic achievement, to enlisting in the U.S. Army as a cook and acquiring extensive culinary, logistics, and management training. The essay then follows the author's transition to civilian contracting in Iraq with ANHAM, a logistics and food distribution company, before concluding with reflections on gratitude, purpose, and the value of examining one's experiences. The paper demonstrates how transferable skills accumulated over two decades in food service, logistics, and leadership informed a decision to pursue a degree in Hospitality Business Management.
Before sharing the culmination of my work skills to date, I must first explore the path that helped shape my personal story. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, I faced inherent challenges from an early age. As a way to keep me engaged, my parents enrolled me in a private school that offered many after-school activities, including sports and church functions. Attending a private school also shielded me from the gang induction and drug activity that had overtaken our neighborhood. Due to increasing violence, my parents, my newborn sister, and I eventually moved to Bolingbrook, a Chicago suburb.
In high school, I excelled in sports — football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. At 6'2" and 250 lbs, I focused primarily on football. Participating in sports provided a productive outlet that engaged my mind and kept me on a positive path. As graduation approached, I had to examine my options seriously. Because I did not receive a scholarship to my school of choice, I decided to join the military rather than burden my parents financially. In essence, it was simply time to begin my own life.
I entered the military as a cook and received my initial training in food service. Military training was extensive and included Sanitation Training, Culinary Arts, Army Food Management Information System (AFMIS) Inventory Control, Account Management, the ServSafe Manager's course, and HRTS Training. Beyond technical skills, Army culture instilled core competencies that I still live by today: resourcefulness, organization, effective communication, a keen sense of responsibility, and creative problem-solving. Through demonstrated competence, I earned several accolades that reflected my commitment to service.
My tenure in the military contributed to a diverse and extensive skill set built over the course of my career. My dynamic, success-driven, and self-motivated professional nature led to broad experience in logistical administration, food service operations, nutrition consultation, leadership, supervision, training, and management. These twenty-plus years of experience laid the foundation for everything that followed.
