Montessori conceived the philosophy that interaction with the environment shapes the cognitive development of a child. She claimed, "The child makes use of all that he finds around him, shapes himself for the future." Montessori methods reformulated the conventional teaching pedagogy of teacher-centered learning into child-centered education, and the approach has continued to attract interest across the globe. The Montessori education system has prevailed for over 100 years, with more than 22,000 Montessori schools now operating in over 100 countries (Marshall, 2017).
Montessori was a major force for the integration of constructivism, sensory theory, and self-directed learning into education curriculum (Cooeny & Samantha, 2018). Born on 31 August 1870 in Chiaravalle, Italy, Maria Montessori became a woman who pushed the limits of traditional Italian society by pursuing engineering and medicine — fields that were predominantly considered male professions (Marshall, 2017). She pursued a medical degree in neurology, specializing in mental illness, and graduated from the University of Rome Medical School, becoming the first woman to be awarded a medical degree in Italy (Cooeny & Samantha, 2018). Working at the pediatric unit and attending to children with intellectual disabilities, Montessori developed an interest in the science, psychology, and special education needs of children (Gutek, 2013). Her appointment as director of the Orthophrenic School opened an opportunity to pursue an integral pedagogical method of children's education in 1901. In 1907, she opened the first Montessori school in the San Lorenzo district of Rome, serving 50–60 children aged 2–6 years from low-income households. The school was the first center to apply Montessori materials that incorporated her clinical experience and observations of child development.
Montessori founded the Association Montessori International (AMI) in 1929 to promote quality education and remained vocal about quality training until her death in 1952. She traveled across the globe to lecture on her theories and is recognized for her contributions to the psychology and education of children. Her work attracted substantial international interest and saw her nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1949, 1950, and 1951 (Marshall, 2017).
Montessori left a lasting legacy in childhood education through her pedagogical method of early childhood teaching. Her educational theories are founded on the sensory education concepts of physicians Édouard Séguin and Jean Itard, as well as the scholarly work of Friedrich Froebel (Cooeny & Samantha, 2018). She argued that a child's mental and physiological constitution determines the child's capacity to act, while the environment provides the essential milieu for cognitive development (Gurek, 2013). Accordingly, it is the interaction between the child and the environment that determines the extent of physical and psychological development. The cornerstone of the Montessori curriculum is autonomy — children are given the freedom to exercise control over their daily learning routine. Montessori emphasized the existence of an inherent capacity in children to bear responsibility and argued that they should be allowed to exercise judgment driven by enthusiasm and imagination. The Montessori curriculum is founded on the concept that interaction with activities, events, beliefs, and ideas constructs one's knowledge and understanding (Ültanır, 2012).
Dr. Montessori believed that children who are allowed to be creative, free, and independent, and who are encouraged to listen to their inner voice, would emerge as free, independent, and creative adults — ensuring a society marked by kindness and peace rather than conflict (Cooeny & Samantha, 2018). Montessori's pedagogical work extensively focused on the "absorbent mind" phase of 0–6 years of cognitive development. This phase entails both cognitive skill development and the establishment of patterns of acculturation and socialization (Gutek, 2013). It involves a psychic construction in which children effortlessly assimilate sensorial stimuli from their environment. According to Montessori, the infancy phase is associated with unconscious survival-skills learning and an extraordinarily high intensity of learning. As she noted, "If we compare our ability as adults to that of the child, it would require us 60 years of hard work to achieve what a child has achieved in the first three years."
Principles of the Montessori Method
One of the overarching pedagogical principles of Montessori education is the learning environment. This principle holds that the learning environment should be designed to support children's intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development through independent and explorative learning (Gutek, 2013). Montessori advocates the home setting as the first learning environment for children — a concept that influenced the establishment of the first Montessori school within the same building where the children resided. Accordingly, the socialization and learning of children is a collective responsibility of both parents and teachers, making the proximity of home and school crucial for consistent learning during formative years.
The Montessori education system emphasizes a "prepared environment" — a natural environment that allows easy functionality and freedom of movement for the child. Unlike the contemporary education structure, in which learners are immobilized at desks, the Montessori classroom is structured to enable learning through hands-on, self-directed activity and collaborative engagement aided by theme-designed learning materials (Ültanır, 2012). According to Montessori, classrooms designed for experiential learning foster deeper understanding of science, mathematics, music, language, and social interactions. She believed that the effective transmission of knowledge occurs through the internalization of concepts and patterns, asserting: "If education is always to be conceived along the same antiquated lines of a mere transmission of knowledge, there is little to be hoped from it in the bettering of man's future."
A typical Montessori classroom is a spacious, open room with multiple shelves and diverse learning materials. The furniture is scaled to the child's size to create an environment similar to the home. Each piece of material in a Montessori classroom serves a specified purpose and is designed to match children's interests. The materials are scientifically designed to reflect modern society and to enable learners to develop cognitive skills. A Montessori classroom allows learners to make choices and direct their own learning, as opposed to the traditional approach in which learners passively receive instruction from teachers (Gurek, 2013).
A second outstanding feature of the Montessori environment is the "three-year mixed-age classroom," which groups children into spans of under 3 years, 3–6 years, 6–9 years, and 9–12 years — in contrast to the traditional schooling model that groups learners in single-age classrooms (Gurek, 2013). The mixed-age concept mimics the home, community, or work environment in which individuals of varying abilities coexist. Such an atmosphere fosters interaction in which learners learn to appreciate, challenge, and help one another. Older children gain opportunities to develop leadership skills, empathy, tolerance, and patience, while younger children observe and absorb virtues such as courtesy, manners, and conflict resolution. Montessori (1949) argued that peer learners have a natural "mental osmosis" that makes a child a more effective instructor to peers than an adult. Given the age differences, children learn at an individualized pace, which eliminates competition, envy, and humiliation prevalent in mainstream curricula. Collaborative learning creates a sense of community and develops essential social skills.
Another distinguishing principle of Montessori education is "self-directed learning," in which children exercise their volition and engage in both independent and group learning based on their own interests. Montessori sought to move away from the conventional teacher-to-learner transmission of knowledge toward an approach that explores the inner teacher and psychic power that children possess from birth. According to Montessori, the teacher functions as a co-explorer and facilitator who motivates children to formulate questions and challenge ideas (Ültanır, 2012). The self-directed learning environment removes the absolute authority over learning materials conferred to teachers by conventional curricula and ensures that the child is the true center of learning. The fundamental role of the teacher is to prepare learning materials and establish a calm, joyful learning atmosphere. Montessori defined the measure of a teacher's success as the ability of students to operate independently, stating: "The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say the children are now working as if I didn't exist."
Montessori introduced the "Follow the Child" philosophy, in which a teacher observes constructively and interferes as little as possible, enhancing joyful exploration and self-discovery. Unlike the conventional education system — in which the teacher's focus is to ensure children learn specific prescribed concepts — Montessori teachers fundamentally nurture internal motivation and critical-thinking skills.
The "role of the child" is another unique feature of the Montessori curriculum. Montessori observed that children have sensitive periods occurring from birth to age six. She argued that children undergo distinctive planes of both psychological and physical change that influence educational development. These planes include infancy (0–6 years), childhood (6–12 years), adolescence (12–18 years), and the transition to adulthood (18–24 years) (Cooeny & Samantha, 2018). The infancy plane — which Montessori (1949) calls the "absorbent mind" phase — encompasses both cognitive skill development and the establishment of patterns of acculturation and socialization (Gutek, 2013). During this phase, children effortlessly assimilate sensorial stimuli from their environment through a process of psychic construction. Montessori argued that a universal law governed cognitive development during the absorbent mind phase. The infancy stage is characterized by an inquisitive mind and is associated with mastering basic human skills such as speech, intelligence, movement coordination, and cultural adaptation.
This phase demonstrates a critical principle of education: that education is a natural process inherently carried out by human beings and acquired through experiences gained from interactions with the environment. As Montessori stated, "Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment." She argued that the education curriculum should align with the transitional sensitive periods when children have an intrinsic compulsion to learn from their immediate surroundings. During these sensitive periods, the child learns, absorbs skills, and assimilates knowledge unconsciously. The sensitive period is also a phase of normalization — a process by which the child adjusts and becomes grounded in their environment through individualized effort, encapsulated in Montessori's phrase: "The child becomes a person through work."

The ultimate objective of education is fostering independence — producing learners who are fully grounded in the dynamics of life. Undoubtedly, the Montessori curriculum is designed to cultivate independence from the very beginning. Education policy should therefore endeavor to incorporate Montessori principles to ensure that children develop both social and academic skills during the critical early phases of cognitive development. As Montessori observed with her first school, Casa dei Bambini, reorienting the education system toward a learner-centered approach — particularly in early childhood education — is fundamentally significant for lifting children from poverty-affected backgrounds, who are often the primary beneficiaries of conventional schooling, out of cycles of educational deprivation.
Rather than treating children as empty vessels to be filled with knowledge, the Montessori philosophy holds that children must be given the opportunity to explore their innate hunger for knowledge.
