Increased patient engagement offers one of the greatest opportunities in the digital era of healthcare.

Using patient portals, a patient can spot and report errors in their electronic medical records, helping to ensure those records remain accurate. While electronic health records (EHRs) were developed to manage clinical information, patient portals offer patients access to their EHR data through an online interface. The data held in an EHR is not always comprehensible to a patient, which necessitates a simplified application through which the patient can understand the information presented.

Portal Design and Information Delivery

Alpert, Krist, Aycock, and Kreps (2016) sought to establish how well patient portals convey information to patients. They proposed that the use of multiple methodologies could yield better results and improve patient portal design. Patients believe that the patient portal can improve their relationship with their doctors, and others have indicated they would feel more encouraged to ask doctors questions. Patient portals have improved patient outcomes by increasing cancer screening rates, especially when information is presented in the patient's language, uses personalized recommendations, and offers educational resources (Alpert et al., 2016). This information should be tailored as educational material geared toward improving the patient's health outcomes. Patient concerns regarding treatment can be addressed within the portal, where patients are offered relevant information and their questions answered immediately or within a defined timeline. This increases the immediacy of information (Alpert et al., 2016), making it more relevant to the patient. Additional methods worth considering include instructional or informational videos, which are effective and interactive in the delivery of health information and may be more engaging than reading text alone.

Patient Engagement and Electronic Medical Records

Dendere et al. (2019) conducted a systematic review of patient portals, their role in patient engagement, and their impact on healthcare delivery. The researchers sought to identify the factors and best practices for successful patient portal implementation. Promoting patient involvement in care delivery can improve both the quality and safety of care, as patients can identify and report errors in their records — for example, a failure to record an allergy that could cause an adverse reaction when certain drugs are prescribed. Patients can use portals to access their laboratory results and even receive reminders to take medications at specified times. The ability of patients to communicate directly with their healthcare provider is a significant addition to the portal's value (Dendere et al., 2019). Having access to a patient portal reduces the need for patients to visit a provider in person, decreasing healthcare costs while improving health outcomes. The provider-patient relationship can also be strengthened when providers and nurses have sufficient knowledge to answer basic patient questions through the portal.

Provider use of the portal and communication with patients is vital. However, some providers remain skeptical about patient portals and may resist adopting the technology (Dendere et al., 2019). For adoption to be seamless, training for both doctors and nurses is essential. Such training allows healthcare providers to understand the application fully, communicate securely with patients, and respond to queries with confidence.
