It then addresses three critical leadership weaknesses: handling mistakes appropriately, managing conflict with insensitive peers, and delivering bad news constructively. The author outlines concrete strategies for each weakness, including admitting errors promptly, using dialogue to resolve conflict, and adopting a compassionate perspective when conveying difficult information. What makes this paper effective
- The paper takes a balanced, self-reflective approach — it does not simply celebrate leadership strengths but devotes equal attention to weaknesses and concrete strategies for addressing them.
- Each weakness is paired with a practical, step-by-step response strategy (e.g., admitting mistakes, minimizing conflict, shifting perspective), which grounds the discussion in actionable leadership behavior.
- The conclusion effectively synthesizes both the strengths and weaknesses sections, reinforcing the central argument without introducing new material.
Key academic technique demonstrated
The paper demonstrates structured self-analysis — a technique common in leadership and management coursework where the writer uses established leadership concepts (communication, delegation, accountability) as a lens for personal reflection. Rather than simply listing traits, the author explains why each quality matters and what consequences follow from its presence or absence, showing cause-and-effect reasoning throughout.
Structure breakdown
The essay follows a four-part structure: a brief introduction defining leadership style and stating the paper's purpose; a strengths section covering communication, decision-making, and personal qualities; a weaknesses section organized around three specific challenges (mistake-handling, peer conflict, delivering bad news); and a conclusion that recaps all major points. This symmetrical organization makes the argument easy to follow and models clear academic essay structure.
Introduction
An individual's leadership style encompasses the way they provide direction, carry out plans, and motivate others. As perceived by subordinates, leadership style reflects the complete pattern of both explicit and implied actions undertaken by their leader. Various frameworks delineate the key approaches by which individuals lead. When such frameworks are understood, it becomes possible to develop one's own approach to leadership and thereby become a more effective leader. The purpose of this paper is to outline my personal leadership style, identifying its core strengths and weaknesses.
Leadership Strengths
As noted above, leadership style is fundamentally about providing direction within an organization. Among the most important strengths a leader can possess is the ability to communicate effectively. The essence of leadership communication is generating shared understanding. Effective communication helps followers grasp the vision, mission, values, and strategic direction of the organization. It involves ensuring that followers are on board, engaging them with the organization's direction, and earning their support. When a leader accomplishes this with every subordinate, the result is an inspirational effect that keeps each individual focused on a common objective. As a result, the leader and team members are able to work in tandem because of their shared understanding of the issues at hand.
The capability of making sound decisions is another core strength within my leadership style. Regardless of the approach taken, a leader is ultimately expected to make key decisions that steer both individuals and the organization as a whole. Different circumstances will inevitably call for different decisions — some may be minor while others are major and pivotal. Decision-making is essential in everyday leadership and is therefore a central element of any leadership style. Although individuals retain autonomy in performing their daily tasks, the ultimate decision-making responsibility rests with the leader. An important component of decision-making is the delegation of duties. A leader must understand the strengths and limitations of each team member in order to assign appropriate tasks. These decisions are critical for ensuring both individual productivity and overall organizational performance.
Confidence, commitment, and passion are equally important qualities. To be an effective leader, it is essential to project sufficient confidence so that subordinates are willing to follow the directions given. A leader who lacks confidence risks being seen as unreliable, causing followers to disengage. Passion for the organization's cause and direction is also vital. When followers and peers observe a leader who is genuinely invested in the mission, they too dedicate themselves more fully. This commitment also helps earn the respect of others and generates the energy necessary for stronger performance.
Conclusion
Leadership style determines the direction a leader provides to followers, the motivation they offer, and the manner in which plans are executed. In developing my personal leadership style, I have considered how to build on my strengths and address my weaknesses. With respect to weaknesses, it is important to take the right steps when a mistake is made — including admitting the error, apologizing when appropriate, and explaining both how the problem occurred and how it will be resolved. A second challenge involves coping with insensitive peers, which requires minimizing unnecessary conflict, maintaining open communication, and remembering that both parties share common organizational goals that dialogue can help achieve. An additional challenge is delivering negative news effectively, which calls for perspective-shifting and compassion toward the recipient, as well as familiarity with a range of communication strategies. Together, these elements provide a foundation for a more self-aware and effective leadership practice.
