Abstract

This paper examines the five primary components of the strategic management process as identified by Hill and Jones (2010): mission and goal selection, external environment analysis, internal environment analysis, strategy selection, and strategy implementation. It explains why each step matters and how together they enable organizations to adopt a proactive, forward-looking approach to decision-making. The paper also touches on the broader relevance of strategic management for long-term organizational health and concludes with a brief look at how Google applies a sociological approach to its strategic management practice.

What makes this paper effective

  • Closely follows a recognized academic framework (Hill and Jones, 2010), anchoring each point in a cited source rather than unsupported assertion.
  • Moves logically from definition to relevance to real-world application, giving the argument a clear three-part arc.
  • Balances theory and practice by ending with a concrete organizational example (Google), showing the concepts are not purely abstract.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates effective use of a single primary framework as a structural spine. By returning repeatedly to Hill and Jones (2010), the writer shows how to build a focused analytical essay around one authoritative source while supplementing it with secondary references for supporting claims. Direct quotation is used sparingly and purposefully, reserved for moments where paraphrase would lose precision.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens by unpacking the five-step strategic management process in sequence. It then shifts to a thematic section on why strategic management matters to organizations broadly. It closes with a short applied section on Google, illustrating how the preceding theory manifests in a real corporate context. This introduction-theory-application pattern is a reliable structure for undergraduate business essays.

The Five Components of the Strategic Management Process

The strategic planning process, according to Hill and Jones (2010), has five main components or steps. The first is the selection of both the goals and objectives of the organization as well as its corporate mission. While a mission statement helps identify a company's purpose, a vision statement is critical in determining what an organization wants to become (Harrison, 2012). Well-defined goals give the company direction with regard to what it seeks to achieve in the short, medium, or long term.

The second component of the strategic management process is the analysis of the external competitive environment of an entity in an attempt to identify not only the available opportunities but also the possible threats. It is important to note that while threats can make it difficult for an organization to actualize and achieve its goals, opportunities available in the marketplace contribute significantly to the growth and expansion of an entity. In that regard, the relevance of conducting an analysis of the external competitive environment cannot be overstated.

Analyzing Internal and External Environments

The third component of the strategic management process is the analysis of an entity's internal operating environment in an attempt to highlight that entity's weaknesses and strengths (Hill and Jones, 2010). Factors a business entity could take into consideration include, but are not limited to, the quality of products, the skills of employees, pricing, and costs of production. This combination of internal and external analysis is commonly known as a SWOT analysis, a foundational tool in strategic planning that helps organizations understand where they stand relative to their competitive landscape.

Strategy Selection and Implementation

The fourth component concerns the selection of "strategies that build on an organization's strengths and correct its weaknesses in order to take advantage of external opportunities and counter external threats" (Hill and Jones, 2010, p. 12). As the authors further point out, these strategies should ideally be consistent with both the major goals and the mission of an entity.

The fifth and final component of the strategic management process is strategy implementation. Formulated strategies can only be useful and beneficial to the organization when they are actually implemented. A well-crafted strategy that remains on paper delivers no competitive advantage; execution is what transforms planning into results.

The Relevance of the Strategic Management Process

The strategic management process must not be viewed as a mere set of guidelines or rules developed for businesses to follow. It is a structured approach to the conduct of business. In addition to ensuring that a company adopts a more proactive — as opposed to reactive — approach to issues, the strategic management process also ensures that a company maintains significant control of its destiny.

This is particularly true given that the strategic management process enhances a business entity's awareness of both the long-term and short-term consequences of decisions made at all levels. Companies that embrace the strategic management process therefore avoid shortsighted undertakings that fail to account for both present and future conditions.
