TQM Implementation at Emirates Global Aluminum Company

~17 min read 6 sections Business · Total Quality Management
Abstract

This paper investigates the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) at Emirates Global Aluminum Company (EGA), one of the world's largest aluminum producers. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines primary data from structured interviews and questionnaires with secondary literature, the research evaluates TQM's effect on three key performance indicators: external customer satisfaction, internal employee satisfaction, and operational efficiency. The paper outlines EGA's organizational background, its supplier evaluation framework, transformation processes, and customer classification system. T-test hypothesis testing comparing EGA with a non-TQM aluminum company reveals that TQM adoption yields measurable improvements across all three indicators. The study concludes with recommendations for broader departmental coverage and further industry-specific research in the United Arab Emirates.

✍️ How to write this paper — guide, tools & examples

What makes this paper effective

  • Grounds abstract TQM principles in a specific, well-defined industrial case study, making theoretical claims testable and concrete.
  • Uses a three-part analytical framework (suppliers, transformation process, customers) that maps cleanly onto TQM's stakeholder logic, giving the analysis clear internal structure.
  • Balances qualitative interview data with quantitative T-test comparisons, demonstrating methodological rigor appropriate for a business research paper.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper exemplifies hypothesis-driven comparative analysis: by pairing EGA (a TQM-adopting firm) against a non-TQM aluminum competitor and measuring three combined values — external customer satisfaction, internal employee satisfaction, and equipment efficiency — the authors isolate the causal contribution of TQM adoption to organizational performance. This controlled comparison strategy is a classic quasi-experimental design used in management research.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with a theoretical framing of TQM and a company overview before stating its objectives. A methodology section covers research design, sampling, and data collection instruments (questionnaires, four interview types). The results section presents interview responses organized by stakeholder group (suppliers, processes, customers) and is supplemented by SPSS-based T-test analysis. The paper closes with a conclusion that ties findings back to TQM philosophy and a brief recommendation for further research. This funnel structure — theory → context → method → evidence → interpretation — is well-suited to applied management case studies.

Introduction to Total Quality Management

Total Quality Management (TQM) is a method of enhancing the competitive advantage of an organization in pursuit of a significant market share, with the aim of increasing profit margins. This is primarily achieved through effective leadership. It entails managerial functions such as coordination, staffing, control, organizing, and planning. Furthermore, TQM requires proactive and strategic leadership in executing quality control measures.

Every business entity or project comprises internal and external customers. The internal customers are the workers of the organization, while the external customers are the clients. Clients are of varied nature: some are linked to the business directly, while others are linked indirectly. The indirect customers are typically the shareholders of the company.

As a management principle, TQM is geared towards improving the production process and satisfying people. The primary goals of TQM are to ensure client satisfaction and to enhance the performance of the organization. Proper coordination of workflow is required if a business is to meet the needs of its customers satisfactorily. Quality in all aspects of the organization is the central concern of TQM. This management principle aims to achieve quality through a reduction of wastage, cutting costs, and improving production efficiency (Charantimath, 2011).

The public sector today is increasingly adopting TQM principles to meet public demands. Everyone demands quality products and services whether they are provided by a public entity or a private business. Nevertheless, integrating this principle and its procedures remains the greatest challenge for almost all organizations. Some entities, when trying to integrate TQM, expect it to run like software that operates on its own to meet required standards; others only partially integrate it. Because of this, many organizations have failed in their endeavor to meet goals that TQM can help achieve. Incorporation of Total Quality Management should be a priority, especially in fast-developing companies like Emirates Global Aluminum, for the purpose of increasing efficiency in the production process (Charantimath, 2011). This company is a noteworthy example of the difficulties organizations face in integrating TQM while struggling to maintain profitability. Competition is now intense due to the increased ease of doing business and the growing globalization of markets. Both foreign and local investors have flooded different market sectors, resulting in competition between organizations to attract investors. Many large corporations are reorganizing their operational procedures to streamline operations and outperform competitors (Charantimath, 2011).

TQM is a philosophy that entails the mutual collaboration of all individuals involved in the business processes of a company. It has been defined as a principle that deals with all activities carried out by a firm with the aim of meeting the expectations of clients, members of the community, and the company itself — in the most effective way possible — by maximizing the potential of all workers in a constant quest for improvement.

TQM is effective in quality development, maintenance, and improvement of the whole production system (In Tetteh & In Uzochukwu, 2015). Both external and internal customers should be satisfied sufficiently. It amalgamates the managerial, mechanical, and cultural aspects of the industry. It is argued that TQM is a philosophy that aims to change not only the way we think but what we believe in; its implementation at Emirates Global Aluminum Company is based on the belief that organizational culture is a determinant factor in employees' behavior — a factor that in turn directly affects quality (In Tetteh & In Uzochukwu, 2015).

Globally, TQM has been adopted by many industries, leading to the conclusion that it is paramount to implement it in order to gain competitive abilities and strategic advantages in the global market. Research has shown that the adoption of TQM as a management philosophy can enable organizations to compete globally. However, different researchers have affirmed that TQM implementation produced positive outcomes in competitiveness, productivity, and quality in only 20 to 30% of organizations that implemented it. In contrast, TQM implementation at Emirates Global Aluminum has seen over 90% improvements in customer satisfaction, internal employee relations, financial management, and operational processes (In Tetteh & In Uzochukwu, 2015).

Emirates Global Aluminum: Company Overview

The Mubadala Development Company in Abu Dhabi and the Investment Corporation of Dubai jointly established Emirates Global Aluminum PJSC ("EGA"). EGA is a combination of assets in the aluminum industry. Its two main subsidiaries are Dubai Aluminum PJSC ("DUBAL") and Emirates Aluminum Company Limited PJSC ("EMAL"). Their combined production yield is 2.4 million tons per annum, making EGA one of the leading aluminum producers worldwide. The Guinea Aluminum Corporation ("GAC"), along with a strategic bauxite mine and alumina refinery development project in West Africa, are all owned by the UAE-based EGA. There are plans to expand locally and internationally (Dhamija, 2008).

One of the long-term strategies of EGA is to establish mutually beneficial relationships with its customers. To achieve this, EGA has invested in the production of quality products combined with effective delivery and customer-centered services, which have enabled the company to increase its market share. Customer-centered services include:

However, different stakeholders of EGA had been accusing each other of poor administration, from production to delivery. The company subsequently adopted TQM principles, which improved service delivery. However, complaints continued to be filed by users of the company's products and services. This research evaluates the quality standards of Emirates Global Aluminum, assessing the integration process and effects of TQM on the company (Dhamija, 2008).

The concept of quality, its varied definitions, and the principles of TQM — in addition to its implementation at EGA — are all covered in this paper. Beyond the effect of TQM on service quality, the text also discusses service quality evaluation from both company and customer perspectives. The stages and characteristics of TQM adoption are discussed in the context of its roadmap, together with the associated benefits and challenges. An overview of the Dubai-based company and the benchmarking need are also included (Franceschini & Galetto, 2006).

Research Objectives and Methodology

The primary goal of this research is to outline the importance of TQM adoption and its principles at EGA. This is done through statistical measurement and comparison of three added values of TQM in aluminum versus non-aluminum industries. The three combined values are:

The objective of the research was to assess the reasons for any negative results obtained when comparing these values — or, in the case of positive results, to explain why those positive outcomes appeared (Franceschini & Galetto, 2006).

The methodology of this research was structured around four components: research design, method of data collection, study population and sample, and data analysis techniques.

The study implemented hypothesis testing at Emirates Global Aluminum to study the effect of TQM on organizational performance. A method called a "logical model of proof" — which allows the researcher to make deductions concerning causal associations among variables — was employed (Matherly, Al, & Al, 2010). The purpose was to investigate EGA's integration of TQM and to discuss the sample type, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques. Conclusions were drawn through both induction and deduction. The inductive process involves observing a phenomenon and drawing a conclusion based on that observation, potentially leading to the creation of a theory or hypothesis. The deductive process involves reaching a rational conclusion through logical generalization of existing knowledge, which may lead to the rejection or acceptance of a hypothesis (Matherly, Al, & Al, 2010).

The research applied both primary and secondary data collection techniques. Secondary data collection involved a synthesis of written and manuscript documents relating to TQM and Emirates Global Aluminum. This method provided a coherent structure for the research and included textbooks, academic articles, and journals related to TQM implementation. Several online resources were also used for the literature review (Morfaw, 2006).

Conclusion and Recommendations

The results of this study show the significant benefits that can come out of implementing Total Quality Management. This research has demonstrated that TQM is an important instrument that can help a corporation remain competitive. If properly utilized, TQM brings about benefits in various business dimensions, including profitability, client satisfaction, staff satisfaction, and operational efficiency. The findings also show that a continuous journey of improvement adds value to customers by enabling the corporation to focus on meeting client expectations, while retraining programs and teamwork give employees a relentless drive to improve quality. Other benefits — including gaining a competitive advantage — can also be achieved through full TQM implementation. Increased profit margins and greater customer satisfaction through efficient production can be realized when TQM is fully adopted. Teamwork and training are crucial for any organization pursuing continuous improvement under this program (Olson & Mendoza, 2015).

Every process, department, and element of the production process is important and requires effective management; failure in any one area will disrupt the overall production process. The consequences of not managing quality effectively were evident in the non-TQM corporation examined, which became inefficient and lost clients because their expectations and needs could not be met. Internal and external customers are equally important and should be managed as a unit, since the effectiveness of any business process depends on how well both types are managed. The importance of fully involving suppliers in the TQM process was also highlighted, as the research revealed that effectiveness is dependent on how well both external and internal delivery processes are managed. Every employee and customer must be involved in the management process if the business is to succeed in terms of quality (Olson & Mendoza, 2015).

One key finding was that management has a central role in ensuring that the organizational culture enables every member to contribute to quality enhancements. Furthermore, involving staff in quality improvement monitoring requires a decentralized organizational structure, since only such a structure allows every individual to participate in finding solutions to the specific quality problems they encounter in their work area (Olson & Mendoza, 2015).

More studies should be carried out covering the remaining departments of Emirates Global Aluminum Corporation to assess the effectiveness of TQM integration in the aluminum industry, using representative sampling techniques. It would also be valuable to evaluate the real perceptions of clients regarding service quality in the United Arab Emirates, as such studies have not previously been conducted in the country. This would provide important insights into the needs and expectations of customers in the aluminum business.
