Walmart Global Strategy: Strengths and Weaknesses

~4 min read 4 sections Business · Global Expansion
Abstract

This paper analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of Walmart's global business strategy. It begins by tracing the company's international expansion since 1991, noting growth in markets such as Mexico, China, Brazil, and South Korea as a counterbalance to slowing domestic sales. The strengths section highlights Walmart's strong brand image, its practice of local product sourcing, and its strategy of acquiring existing local companies to convert their customer bases. The weaknesses section addresses challenges including language barriers, foreign business regulations requiring use of local suppliers, intensifying competition from rival retailers, and the distinct purchasing habits of consumers in markets like China. Together, these points offer a balanced assessment of Walmart's mixed international performance.

What makes this paper effective

  • Uses concrete country-level examples (Mexico, Canada, China) to ground abstract strategic claims in real business decisions.
  • Maintains a balanced structure by devoting separate sections to strengths and weaknesses, giving each equal analytical treatment.
  • Connects Walmart's domestic challenges to its international motivations, establishing a logical rationale for the global strategy.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates applied strategic analysis: it takes a theoretical framework (global vs. local adaptation) and applies it systematically to a real company, using cited academic sources to support each claim. This moves the analysis beyond description into evaluation, which is characteristic of undergraduate business writing.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with contextual background on Walmart's international expansion, then moves into two clearly labeled analytical sections — Strengths and Weaknesses — before closing with references. Each section follows a pattern of claim, example, and brief explanation, keeping the argument focused and readable. The two cited sources (Ghemawat, 2013; Menon, 2014) are integrated to lend authority to specific claims rather than used as general background only.

Introduction

Walmart has developed its business globally in order to ease competitive pressure in its domestic market. Today, the company places considerable hope in its global strategy, which has proven more successful than domestic sales in recent years. After initiating its international approach in 1991, Walmart now operates in over 50 countries across the globe. Underperforming stores in the United States have been offset by growing sales in countries such as Mexico, China, Brazil, and South Korea. The economic growth of these nations has created favorable conditions for Walmart's expansion. For this reason, the company's current focus is on opening additional stores in economically strong regions, including Asian countries such as Japan and African markets such as South Africa. It is important to note, however, that the company has experienced mixed results in Europe, performing well in some countries but struggling in others (Ghemawat, 2013).

Strengths of Walmart's Global Strategy

Walmart's global strategy benefits significantly from its strong brand image. The brand is recognized in major markets such as Mexico and China, which creates opportunities to establish and expand new stores with less friction. The company also practices strategic local sourcing: in China, for example, Walmart purchases most of its products from American companies that operate within the country. This approach gives consumers a sense of familiarity with American-quality goods while also creating the perception that the products originate locally. Such local adaptation has proven especially valuable in countries with business cultures that differ substantially from that of the United States.

A second major strength of the global strategy is Walmart's practice of acquiring local companies in the markets it enters. In Canada, Walmart successfully transformed Woolco into a thriving retail operation despite the challenges Woolco faced at the time. The company employed a similar approach in Mexico, where it acquired a local company and subsequently obtained a majority shareholding, gaining full ownership rights. By doing so, Walmart is able to convert the acquired company's existing customer base into its own. Research and development also plays an integral role in the company's international operations, particularly when entering new markets (Menon, 2014).

Conclusion

Walmart's international expansion reflects both the opportunities and the difficulties inherent in global retail strategy. Its strong brand, local acquisition model, and adaptive sourcing practices represent genuine competitive advantages. At the same time, language barriers, regulatory constraints, rising competition, and varying consumer behaviors continue to present real obstacles. Understanding this balance is essential for evaluating the long-term sustainability of Walmart's global ambitions.
