Women do play some role in the promotion of the tough guise image. Whether they would like to admit it or not, most women's idea of a man is one that is strong, macho and protective of them. The saying that, 'Nice guys finish last' has some truth to it. Many women look over the shy, quiet type of man because of the images they have seen in the media and in everyday life. This type of man has no appeal because he is seen as a pushover and the women feel that he could not protect and care for them the way a tough guy could.
The film covered several aspects of the reasoning behind the tough guise. He discussed how the image in perpetuated in young boys almost from the day they are born. He covered how the image plays out along racial and class lines. But, the image of the tough guise is so prevalent throughout all races and classes that it seems nearly impossible to make a chance. Chances are that the majority of
parents would rather their son play a
sport than become a ballet dancer. It might help for women to get more involved in this tough guise issue. By taking a more active role in their son's development and letting them know it is okay to have and show their true feelings, maybe the cycle will begin to break. This film could also be used in any
discussion about other types of inequalities between the sexes, but again women will have to stand up and take on larger roles in order for there to be some type of change. It is no longer acceptable to sit back and say it is a man's world. Women have to work together to make this world equal for both sexes.
