The National Mall
The National Mall is a setting that truly captures the soul and grandeur of American exceptionalism. Aesthetically speaking, it boasts cherry blossoms in the spring that add a splash of color. Summer brings green lawns filled with visitors; autumn has its own reflective beauty with that gives the scene a refined and noble character; and winter, too, covers the mall in a quiet chill, with frost and snow. Each season adds something to the experience of the Mall for its many visitors year round. But the Mall is even more than its aesthetics: it has physicality, social meaning, and political and cultural significance, too.
Physical Aspects
The National Mall stretches from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, and its landscape consists of immense monumental significancereflected in its vast open spaces, lined with American elms, and in the structures within and around itlike the Reflecting Pool that it frames. It gives a panoramic view of the Capitol, Washington Monument, and Lincoln Memorial. The physical layout is a testament to the grandeur of American civic design, with each monument and museum meticulously placed to inspire awe and reverence (Evans & York, 2013). The condition of these structures and the surrounding areas is pristine, a clear indication of diligent maintenance and respect for their historical importance.
The Mall is...…glimpse of American history, art, and culture, with their collections that range from the original Star-Spangled Banner to the Apollo lunar module (Neufeld, 2014). These institutions are repositories of artifacts; they are also gateways to understanding the American experience.
