Letter of Intent

What are your short- and long-term career goals and how will this program prepare you for them?

My short-term goals are to get a very high quality education in the nursing field, learning as much as I can both with hands-on skills and academic-related skills and background informational sources that are relevant to nursing education. My long-term goal is to work in a healthcare setting as a Family Nurse Practitioner and/or an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. I have had a plan for many years to get the training and certification needed to provide holistic and pragmatic care for people who are sick or injured.

What do you view as key attributes of being a successful FNP/ACNP and why?

I believe there are several important qualities and attributes needed for the FNP/ACNP professional. Having good health, strong endurance, and besides physical endurance this nurse must have very strong mental endurance because nurse practitioners must be able to think on their feet and be ready for any emergency. Next, this nurse has to be a good communicator, to be able to interact verbally with patients, families, and other professionals on the floor, including doctors. Patience is also an attribute that is vital to a nurse in this genre; when a patient is frustrated and insecure, the nurse practitioner must be calm and professional. Also, being a caring person is very important, and being a professional that encourages patients to follow procedures and be positive is a necessary part of the profession.

THREE: How will you dedicate the time and effort to be successful in the program?

I am fully prepared to give of my time, my talent, my energy, and my full attention to everything I am asked and required to do. I do not go into this program thinking I can breeze through or somehow just to what is necessary. My whole adult life I have been the kind of person who is dedicated to putting out 100% of my energy to accomplish my goals, and whatever time it takes to do this work, and get the training I need, I will eagerly make that investment.

FOUR: What do you see as major trends in healthcare? What do you see as your role in that?

According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), the healthcare delivery system has gone through "tremendous change" over the recent past, as new and revolutionary technologies have come into the field (CDC). New and powerful drugs have emerged in the healthcare field; new devices and procedures are constantly being launched and/or upgraded (CDC).

There has been a remarkable growth in how surgery is conducted, and improvements in anesthesia and analgesia have made providing care more effective (CDC). "Procedures that formerly required a few weeks on convalescence now require only a few days," and "great strides have been made in identifying causes of disease" (CDC).

Public education campaigns have been somewhat effective in urging the public to exercise, to lose weight, and to eat healthy foods, although millions of citizens are obese and the threat of diabetes is greater when a person is very overweight.
