¶ … precious to us, we spend very little time thinking about where the water in our community comes from, what organisms other than ourselves it serves, and what is being done to protect the quality of water in our community both for ourselves as humans and for other organisms that are dependent upon the local watershed. This paper examines a pair of groups that is in fact looking out for local water quality, the kind of conservation group that advocates the protection of our environment for all that use it basing their beliefs and recommendations upon both a committed philosophy as well as careful scientific analysis. The first of these two groups is the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy, a nonprofit organization "founded in 1964 by local citizens to combat pollution in the Perkiomen Creek and its tributaries."
The conservancy, which is headed by a 14-member board of directors along with an advisory board of seven people and a staff of seven, has over 500 individual and family members as well as 33 municipal members and comprises a number of different individual programs, including an educational program, conservation programs, land stewardship and protection programs
. The organization, like most other conservation groups of its type, depends upon both individual and corporate and foundation support, and has received money from over 30 companies and foundations since it was founded.
It should perhaps be noted before continuing what exactly...
Water Pollution The vast majority -- over 70% -- of our earth is covered by water. Unfortunately for our thirst, 97.5% of all the water on the planet is salt water. Only 2.5% of the water on planet earth is fresh drinking water. Given that there is such a small percentage of drinkable water on the planet, the resource has become a scarce commodity. Making matters worse is the fact that
Water Pollution Water is an important natural resource upon which all the living beings rely for their existence and growth. Nature has blessed the earth with uncountable water resources but usable quantity is limited. Hence, it is important to use water sparingly. The irony is, human activities result is high water pollution which further shortens the water supply for use. "In an age when man has forgotten his origins and is blind
In the absence of proper waste management laws and regulations, as well as poor enforcement of existing waste disposal laws, an increase in the number of manufacturing entities would inevitably increase instances of water pollution. According to Goel (2006), the mere fact that smaller cities report less instances of water pollution than larger cities is a clear indicator of the relationship that exists between population density and water pollution
In the year following that incident, China's State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) announced a five-year plan to address the widespread water pollution issues, committing a budget of 125 billion dollars to that national effort (Pacific Environment, 2006). In 2006 alone, the SEPA responded to 161 emergency environmental pollution incidents, almost two-thirds of which pertained to water pollution (China Daily, 2008). Solving the Water Pollution Problem in China: According to Ke Zhang
The trouble is not only in the city of Tianjin but wastewater pollution in China is also found in the east central part of China which is three hundred miles west of Shanghai, lies the Chao Lake and is one of China's five largest freshwater lakes. The major resource of drinkable water supply comes from the Chao Lake. It is also used for an economic as well as an
water pollution in Lake Huron Lake Huron is one of the great lakes that face the challenge of pollution in Ameica. Pollution in the lake prompted the binational partnership aimed at safeguarding areas of concern that have high quality habitats. According to the environmental protection agency, the partnership undertakes remedial action plans aimed at combating the threat fish, wildlife and public health that emanate from water pollution (EPA, 2012).
