Rhetorical Awareness
Rhetorical awareness is the understanding that workplace writing is persuasive and must consider the rhetorical situation, which includes the purpose, audience, stakeholders, and context of the document.
The difference between genre-based approach to professional communication and rhetorical awareness is approach is really a matter of form and substance. The genre-based approach focuses on learning from and reproducing forms or templates of documents. In contrast, the rhetorical awareness approach focuses on thinking about the goals and situations that surround the need to write. Professional writing still uses reports, white papers, and so, but authors should approach this work with the consideration for the rhetorical situation rather than simply looking at documents as an isolated and disconnected exercise.
User-centered design is an approach that focuses on the expectations, goals, situations, and needs of the readers. As such, the approach can help writers create documents that are more reader- and user-friendly, easier to access, and comprehensible by the target audience.
A website or text that exemplifies user-centered design would be one that is easy to navigate, moves from general to specific information, uses informative headings and topic sentences, avoids jargon, and structures sentences clearly with the main idea presented upfront. An example could be a website with a clear layout, intuitive navigation, concise content, and visual aids that support quick understanding. I think that Zerohedge.com is a good example of a website with user-centered design. The main idea is usually conveyed in a quick blurb below the title in bold, and headings help to guide the reader. There are links on the left, and nothing extraneous to get in the way of the readers engagement with the site. On the other hand, a website that is cluttered, uses complicated jargon without explanations, and lacks clear navigation could be improved from a user-centered design standpoint, and an example of this for me would be DrudgeReport.com. I find this website simply unreadable, as there is no guidance for the eye, no logic to the layout, and nothing enticing in the way it is visually set up.
