Servant Leadership in a Community Church Fundraiser

~7 min read 5 sections Theories · Leadership Theory
Abstract

This paper reflects on the application of servant leadership and authentic leadership principles within a real community setting — specifically, the planning and execution of an annual ravioli dinner fundraiser at a parish church. The author describes how the event was conceived to strengthen church-community ties and benefit a local homeless shelter, drawing on Northouse's (2016) servant leadership framework and concepts of transparency and emotional support from authentic leadership theory. The paper also includes a personal leadership development plan focused on improving agreeableness and transparency to expand future outreach initiatives.

What makes this paper effective

  • The paper grounds abstract leadership theories (servant and authentic leadership) in a concrete, personal narrative, making the concepts immediately accessible and credible.
  • Citations from peer-reviewed sources (Northouse, Hunter et al., Wong and Laschinger) are woven naturally into the reflection, demonstrating academic engagement without disrupting the personal voice.
  • The leadership development plan section shows self-awareness and forward thinking, which strengthens the reflective quality of the paper overall.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates effective use of theory-to-practice integration. The author identifies specific leadership behaviors — emotional healing, transparency, serving helpers' needs — and matches each to named theoretical constructs supported by citations. This technique shows the reader exactly how abstract frameworks manifest in real decision-making contexts.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with a narrative account of the fundraiser's origin and execution, then transitions into a critical analysis section that introduces leadership theory. Subsequent paragraphs apply servant and authentic leadership concepts progressively, using a specific anecdote (helping a volunteer with flier distribution) to illustrate broader principles. The paper closes with a two-part personal action plan addressing agreeableness and transparency.

Introduction: A Community Giving Initiative

In my community, our church had always wanted to do something to give back and provide assistance to people, but no one in the parish could agree on an appropriate undertaking. I came up with the idea of hosting a ravioli dinner to celebrate the community's Italian heritage, paired with an all-day benefit: community members could bring whatever size pot they had and fill it with ravioli for $10, with all proceeds donated to the local homeless shelter.

I utilized my servant leadership skills to help move this idea into action by supporting others and giving them whatever assistance they needed. I surrounded myself with like-minded individuals from the parish — about half a dozen — to help organize the event, and I asked each of them what they needed to make the idea a reality. Through those discussions, I was able to supply these helpers with the tools and time they needed to bring about this change and turn the event into an annual fund drive to benefit the homeless in the community. We arranged cooks, clean-up crews, neighborhood businesses to provide ingredient donations, and a team to promote the dinner. Every year we hold this event, and I continue to lead the team through servant leadership.
