What makes this paper effective
- The paper is organized into clearly delineated parts that move logically from description to analysis to recommendation, giving readers a coherent framework for understanding Tesla's communication landscape.
- Concrete examples — such as Musk's April Fools "bankwupt" tweet and autopilot accident coverage — ground abstract communication concepts in real, identifiable events.
- The paper balances praise and critique, acknowledging Tesla's communication successes while honestly identifying risks and failures, which lends credibility to the argument.
Key academic technique demonstrated
The paper demonstrates applied organizational communication analysis: it uses a real-world company as a case study, applies theoretical frameworks (such as the definition of sustainability), and draws practical, evidence-based recommendations. This technique bridges academic concepts with observable business behavior, making the argument both relevant and actionable.
Structure breakdown
The paper is divided into three parts. Part I establishes Tesla's organizational identity, mission, and market niche. Part II analyzes specific strategic communication methods — social media, press releases, webcasts, and branding — with supporting examples. Part III offers a balanced assessment of what works and what does not, followed by targeted recommendations for improving Tesla's communication strategy.
Introduction: Tesla's Mission and Market Position
Tesla is a niche-market company that manufactures electric vehicles and batteries to advance the green energy movement. Guided by the vision of CEO Elon Musk, Tesla launched its automotive business with two luxury models — the Tesla Model X and the Tesla Model S. More recently, the company has been working on mass production of a lower-priced vehicle, the Tesla Model 3, aimed at consumers outside the luxury market. Tesla's mission statement is: "to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport by bringing compelling mass market electric cars to market as soon as possible" (Tesla, 2013). At the core of its business is the concept of providing a product that promotes sustainability and does not rely on the burning of fossil fuels for transportation. Tesla's vehicles are battery powered rather than gas powered, which is how the company aims to support the sustainability initiative. As Evans (2017) points out, "sustainability is the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
To support its mission, Tesla also acquired Solar City, a solar panel company, in an effort to broaden its scope and incorporate renewable energy production into its own operations. By positioning itself as a company dedicated to green energy, Tesla has attracted consumers who are interested in supporting a business that takes sustainability seriously. So far, Tesla has succeeded in winning strong investor support, with its stock price rising exponentially in recent years. However, the firm still faces challenges in meeting its production goals for the Model 3.
