Participation And Personal Experience With Regulatory Visit Essay

¶ … participation and personal experience with regulatory visit preparation and about the Quality Improvement process in your healthcare organization. Include a reflection about an observation you made about how a nurse leader used her power to implement change to improve a process, or how you were empowered to lead the planning and implementation of a change to improve a process.

In my experience, quality improvement is becoming integrated with all aspects of health care management. My organization has a dedicated Quality Improvement specialist, and that person has several assistants who perform regular assessments related to quality and safety in the organization. My experience reflects a prevailing trend in health care. As Nieva & Sorra (2003) found, "increasingly, healthcare organizations are becoming aware of the importance of transforming organizational culture in order to improve patient safety." Improving patient safety is a goal that all practitioners share, which is why health care practitioners like me are dedicated to participating in any quality assessment methods being used by our organizations.

My supervisor volunteered to participate in a patient survey regarding quality of care. We interviewed patients at random, to provide feedback to the Quality Improvement specialist. The Quality Improvement specialist fed our data into her system to offer quantitative analyses of how effective the measures were in improving patient perceptions of care. During the survey and analysis, my supervisor noted that there were specific areas of patient care that needed more attention but which were not included in the survey. For example, equipment maintenance was a part of the overall quality improvement assessment but there was no evaluation of staff training with regards to using the equipment.

I spearheaded an initiative related to evidence-based practice. As my team of nurses included people from different backgrounds, we all had different approaches to patient care. I realized that inconsistencies in patient care could be detrimental to outcomes, and detracted from care continuity. Therefore, I encouraged our manager to mandate the use of evidence-based practice. This was not to diminish the importance of personal experience, but to emphasize the importance of including scientific evidence when delivering care to patients.
