Attendance Policy in College Argument against Mandatory Attendance Policies in College Classes The beauty of college is the fact that most of the students are adults. Professors do not have to act as babysitters with their students, forcing them to obey rules that have nothing to do with education in order to allow them to pass.

I agree with the notion that college professors should not be permitted to set restrictive attendance policy because college students are responsible adults who learn at their own pace and can use their own judgment in regards to attendance and studying decisions. Students attending college are mostly all adults over the age of 18. There are very few legally defined minors on any given college campus. From a legal perspective, anyone over the age of 18 is responsible enough to govern over their own behavior.

They no longer need the presence of a guardian to make crucial decisions for them. As such, the same should go in regards to how professors treat their adult students. College students are not high school students. They do not need to be babysat or treated like children by being guided through every aspect of their educational experience. College students are adults who have made a conscious decision to attend classes at a higher education University or campus.

Additionally, many of these responsible adult students understand the process of how their individual mind learns most effectively. As adults, college students are more adept to tuning into their own consciousness as a way to understand their own internal learning processes. They have a heightened understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, especially compared to less mature high school students who still are unsure of their own learning processes. Some students may not learn in the same process there professor uses to teach course material.

When classes are not as challenging as some students require, they may actually learn more by going through the material on their own. In cases of professors who simply read aloud the course textbook, most college students do not need the heightened level of guidance that a mandatory attendance policy insurers. Moreover, most college students are paying out of their own pocket or relying on scholarship money in order to attend classes.

Due to the fact that they are paying for their own education, there should be greater freedom on behalf of the student who is paying for their own educational experience. Each student should have greater authority in how they experience their time as a college student because of the fact that they are the ones who are paying for it. College students are investing in their own education. As such, they should have a greater authority and how they choose to use their time during that process.

Still, there are those who may still not have the level of responsibility needed in order to make such crucial decisions about their education. Many students might not have the discipline to study on their own, and thus mandatory attendance actually makes the benefit from forcing them to study in a more fruitful educational environment, with the added advantage of knowledgeable professor guidance. However, this is still not enough of a reason for college professors to instill mandatory attendance policies.

In fact, students who do not have the level of responsibility needed it for a college education will have to learn the discipline to get through their college experience. They must learn on their own importance of attending class and the level of independent work that would need to increase.
