As his characters struggle with the inherent problems with their "utopian" society, the character names constantly remind the reader of important political, economic, and social figures. As such, Huxley's use of character names like Bernard Marx, Lenina Crowe, and Benito Hoover reflects Huxley's concern over the types of methods used to control individuals in modern society. In Brave New World, Huxley explores a society set in the future. The novel expresses Huxley's fear that mankind would create a utopia that ultimately gave away everything that makes life worth living. Western Europe was coming under the control of fascists, and Marxist theory was becoming extremely well-known and discussed. These two events likely caused Huxley to fear a world dominated by Marxist socialist thought, and controlled by a fascist regime. In Brave New World, Huxley outlines the incredible dangers inherent in creating a utopia, even with the very best of intentions.
The character's names in Brave New World clearly reflect Huxley's preoccupation with political, economic, and social conditions. Most of the main characters in the book have names that reflect clear connotations of the political and social environment of his era. By using these names, Huxley clearly allows the connotations to speak clearly of the social and political ideologies and ideas of his day. His is particularly concerned with the means in which humans are controlled in the political, social and economic spheres.
