The Impact of Faith-Based Community Programs on the Well-being of At-Risk Youth

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to explore the role of faith-based community programs in promoting the well-being and resilience of at-risk youth. Drawing on a biblical perspective, this research investigates the experiences and perceptions of program participants, organizers, and community members. The study will employ a phenomenological approach, incorporating in-depth interviews, focus groups, and participant observations. Data will be analyzed using thematic analysis, with validity and reliability ensured through triangulation and member checking.

Introduction

The study will explore the impact of faith-based community programs on the well-being of at-risk youth, emphasizing the role of spirituality and Christian values in promoting resilience and positive development. The research problem lies in the potential of faith-based initiatives to address social, emotional, and spiritual challenges faced by vulnerable young people. The scriptural basis of this project is: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." (Galatians 6:9-10). This quote emphasizes the importance of doing good works and helping others, particularly those within the community of believers, which aligns with the goals of faith-based community programs in supporting at-risk youth (Gordon, 2022).

Role and Reflexivity

As the researcher, my role will be that of an active listener and observer. I will be sensitive to the experiences and perspectives of participants, acknowledging my own beliefs, biases, and assumptions. Reflexivity will involve continuous self-awareness and reflection on how my own faith and background may influence the research process and interpretation of findings.

Data Collection Procedures

The study will employ a purposive sampling strategy to recruit participants from faith-based community programs serving at-risk youth. Data will be collected through in-depth interviews with program organizers, community leaders, and youth participants, providing insights into their experiences, perceptions, and the impact of the programs on their lives. Small group discussions with program participants and community members will facilitate the exploration of shared experiences and the collective impact of the programs. Attending program events and activities will provide a firsthand understanding of the program dynamics and the ways in which biblical principles are integrated into the programs.

Data Recording Procedures

Interviews and focus groups will be audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Field notes will be taken during participant observation sessions, documenting observations, reflections, and relevant contextual information.

Data Analysis Procedures

A thematic analysis approach will be used to identify patterns and themes in the data. This will involve a systematic process of coding, categorizing, and interpreting the data, aided by qualitative data analysis software.

Interpretation

The interpretation of findings will be guided by the biblical perspective, with particular attention given to the role of faith, spirituality, and Christian values in promoting resilience and well-being among at-risk youth. Findings will be contextualized within the broader literature on faith-based interventions and youth development.

Validity and Reliability

To ensure the trustworthiness of the study, several strategies will be employed, including triangulation, member checking, peer debriefing, and thick description. Using multiple sources of data will enable the cross-verification of findings. Participants will be given the opportunity to review and provide feedback on the interpretation of their accounts, ensuring accuracy and credibility. Regular discussions with colleagues and mentors will facilitate reflexivity and enhance the rigor of the research process. Providing detailed descriptions of the context, participants, and processes will enable readers to assess the transferability of the findings.
