Global warming myth is proliferated for political purposes. Special-interest groups have wooed politicians for sponsorship, garnering increased funding for scientifically spurious endeavors. Although many scientists substantiate claims that global warming is occurring and that global warming is caused by human actions, the myth can be easily debunked.
First, most global warming theories are based not on observable data but on computer modeling. Methods of prediction like computer modeling are inherently fallible. Models are not truth. Second, whatever warming has, is or will take place is caused naturally. The earth has undergone significant fluctuations in temperature throughout its history including a series of ice ages. These wild fluctuations occur over long periods of time, and current changes are minute and insignificant compared with the earth's climatological history.
Third, greenhouse gases are not entirely produced by human activity. Nature produces a large portion of the greenhouse gases necessary to keep the earth a habitable planet. Fourth, the sun may also be contributing to any global warming. Finally, the evidence used to support the theory of anthropogenic global warming is often unsound. For instance, many environmentalists and fear-mongers claim that large storms like Hurricane Katrina prove that global warming is taking place. Nothing could be farther from the truth, as large storms and other kinds of natural disasters have plagued human beings long before the advent of industry.
Thus, global warming is a myth. The myth can be debunked on the basis of its political expediency alone. Scientific evidence better supports a climate change theory that takes into account the Earth's broader cycles, illustrating how the ocean and surface temperatures on our planet have fluctuated before homo sapiens ever evolved. If climate change is occurring, it is occurring only as a part of these overall cycles and fluxes.
