Labor Force Trends Human Resource Director, Angela, has just called in Michael, Senior-level HR Manager and Ashley, Junior-level HR Manager, for a weekly meeting. There is new data presented that shows that the organization's labor force has started aging and is more diverse. In addition to the increased diversity and aging, the organization's workforce is also characterized by skill deficiencies. Michael and Ashley have been given the mandate of creating programs that deal with these concerns in order to establish better work systems, adopt technology easily, and transform employment relationship. Michael and Ashley have adopted various strategies towards addressing the labor force issues in the organization such as recruiting new employees, enhancing flexibility to retain talent, and developing a training program for employees.

While these strategies could help deal with the current issues in the organization's workforce, there are some adjustments that could be made to the proposed strategies to support the changes related to better work systems, adopting technology, and transforming employment relationship. One of the adjustments to make to support these crucial factors in the organization is involving the operations and activities is vital towards achieving success and enhancing productivity. The involvement of workers in development of work systems and selection of production technology is much more important to support these goals. In addition to establishing programs that enhance the technical expertise of young and old workers in the organization, involving them in this process is important because what matters is not the technology itself but the complex interaction between employees and process technologies or work systems.
Secondly, the creation of a supportive and committed organizational environment is an important adjustment to include in the proposed strategies. This is an important factor because of its direct role and impact on broader diffusion of high-performance practices in the organization (Kumar, n.d.). While it is vital to develop these strategies, their success is largely dependent on the organizational environment. This implies that a supportive and committed organizational environment is as crucial as the strategies themselves. In this case, managers will develop practices, operations, and systems that generate mutual gains and potential.
