Psychiatric Disabilities Description of Facility

The inpatient psychiatry program at the University of Michigan Hospital is on the ninth floor of the hospital building. It has 25 newly renovated bed units and offers both private and semi private room facilities. There is a reading library, fitness facilities, internet access terminals, and dining room access facilities. A number of community rooms are also supplied with television sets and comfortable seating places.

There is a special intensive care unit for those with psychiatric needs. It caters for patients that need more support from and is separated from the general ward area. The patients attended in this unit still have access to a number of amenities provided in the other sections.

Services/purpose

This clinic provides diagnosis and comprehensive treatment for patients with severe psychiatric problems. Patients often visit the unit for treatment under complicated circumstances. The hospital staff is dedicated to working as a team to deliver quality evidence-based care and treatment services to all patients visiting the facility. They also seek to bolster the dignity and respect for patients in secure healing surroundings. These nurses endeavor to improve the lives of their patients and assist them to improve their functioning in their places of work and their social relationships, including how they relate with family and other significant players in their lives. The method used in the treatment planning involves the participation of both medical experts and the patients to come up with best suited recommendations for the aspects of treatment during the stay of patients at the hospital. They have included group and individual psychotherapy approaches, medications and psychosocial strategies. The plans also include models for patients to continue with managing their illness even after they leave the facilities.
Personnel

The facility staffs apply interdisciplinary patient care services. There are treatment teams that guide each patient in their stay at the facility. The teams aim at providing a healthy environment for patient stay and care so as to facilitate the patients to focus on recovery. Once a patient is admitted, they are assigned a treatment team. There is a U-M faculty psychiatrist attending and a resident nurse practitioner or physician, a primary care nurse and patient care staff (PCWs). There is also a social worker and numerous activity therapists. The team is often joined by a clinical pharmacist to help out with education on medication and related decisions. The team treats the patient as the most important member in their midst. The hospital encourages all patients to take part in treatment planning from admission point to when they have been discharged and beyond.
