ANTI-DRUG TEEN ADVICE SPEECH "The most important reason that you should avoid using illegal drugs (or using prescription drugs "recreationally") has nothing to do with laws or morals but with long- term health consequences, particularly to your brain. By definition, almost all drugs that are typically abused or used for unauthorized "recreation" produce psychoactive effects. Generally, the psychoactive effects of drugs produce pleasurable sensations precisely because they alter the manner in which the human brain ordinarily uses and reacts to neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters control moods, emotional responses, as well as many other aspects of personality and learning ability.

The artificial alteration of normal neurological functioning causes long-term physical changes in the brain, some of which have been conclusively linked to clinical depression, as well as to decreased cognitive functioning. Certain psychoactive drugs like marijuana "only" damage your ability to learn and to your long and short-term memory; others actually destroy the receptor sites of neurons in the brain. Whereas the harms associated with some illicit (and prescription) drugs is cumulative, some of the most popular recreational drugs such as ecstasy actually destroy neurons each and every time they are used.
