Discussion
Rogers five qualities(a) Openness to experience, (b) Existential living, (c) Organismic trusting, (d) Experiential freedom, and (e) Creativityhelp to bring about the ideal self, which is what drives the actualized self. For an individual to be self-actualized, he has to be tapped into each of these five qualities. The qualities that I think are most important for full-functioning are openness to experience and experiential freedom. One not only has to be open to experience but one also has to have the freedom to indulge in experience. If one is had without the other, the experience required for development of the actualized self cannot be obtained.
The least important quality is creativity. This is not to say it is not required at all because it is still essential, but it comes after organismic trust, which is the ability to value what the self is telling you, and the existential living, the ability to live ones life and exist in it. Creativity comes last in that it is a driving force that enables the actualized self to manifest itself in creative waysso of course it is vital but it is conditional in a sense upon the other qualities.
Rogers view compares with Maslows in that Maslow had developed a hierarchy of needs that individuals had to have met before they could reach self-actualization. The hierarchy started with basic human needs like shelter and security and climbed upwards to love, friendship and esteem, and finally to self-determination. Adlers approach was similar in that people are basically just trying to survive with the cards theyve been dealt in life. He rejected the determinism of Freud and Jung and view people as conscious beings making choices based on their environment and what they desired to achieve for themselves.

These qualities, I would agree, are related to personalitybut I think the relationship is probably more complex than we are able to explain. For me, it is like a chicken and the egg type of problem: which came first, the chicken or the egg? Which came first in the human, the personality or the qualities?
