High School Admissions Essay

I have always been fascinated by the ocean and the incredible creatures that call it home. Now that I am approaching high school, I know that I want to pursue a career in marine biology. At the same time, computer science is a big passion of mine. For me personally, it would be a great joy to be able to marry these two fields and use my computer science skills in the field of marine biology.

In order to achieve this goal, I have been taking rigorous science classes and participating in extracurricular activities like swim club and robotics. Eventually I want to go to a college that has a strong marine biology program. After graduation, I hope to attend graduate school and ultimately get a job working as a marine biologist. Every day, I am one step closer to achieving my dream of working in the STEM field and making a difference in the world.

Swimming is a big part of my life, and it is a sport that offers many benefits, both personal and professional. For me, swimming in a club has helped me to improve organization and time management skills. In addition, it has been a great opportunity for me to promote physical fitness while at the same time creating an opportunity to socialize with other club members. Swimming has also helped me to improve my mental wellbeing by giving me a great way to deal with stress and recreate in a meaningful way. When it comes to professional development, I believe that swimming in a club has also helped me to develop leadership skills. And another great aspect of being in a swim club is that it can provide networking opportunities and help students gain experience working with others. As a result, I feel really supported by my passion for swimming and that I can reach my personal and educational goals for high school with this support.

I chose this area of study (STEM) for high school because 1) I love computer science, and 2) I want to deepen my understanding of the disciplines that will help me to become a marine biologist. First of all, STEM education is increasingly being recognized as vital for high school students. A recent report by the Committee on STEM Education of the National Science and Technology Council showed indicated that a student’s success in STEM courses is essential for their future success in the workforce. In addition, STEM skills are in high demand in a variety of industries. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that there will be 1.2 million job openings in computer and information sciences from 2018 to 2028.

However, the number of students completing STEM degrees has not kept pace with this demand. This skills gap can only be filled if more students pursue STEM studies in high school. In addition to providing students with the skills they need to succeed in the workforce, STEM education also helps to encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills (Ramsey, Baethe). Studies have shown that students who are engaged in STEM activities are more likely to develop these important abilities (Freeman). As our world becomes increasingly reliant on technology, it is clear that STEM education is essential for preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century.

STEM is an area that also supports my love for computer science and my desire to become a marine biologist. I have long been passionate about computer technology ever since I first learned to work a keyboard and an interface. I have also long had a love for the sea and the life in it. I am really hoping my high school career will be a spring board for me to catapult into my adult life with the skills I need to succeed.
