Reflective Essay on Teacher Leadership

Introduction

This course has been very helpful in giving me a sense of what it means to be a teacher who leads. As I reflect on the values, goals, skills, and dispositions assessments conducted in the initial weeks, I can see how well I have grown and identify areas for continuous improvement. Here, I will discuss my greatest insights, hopes, concerns, and plans for future development in teacher leadership.

Greatest Insight from the Course

My greatest insight from the course is the impact that teacher leadership has on student learning and the overall school environment. I now understand that teacher leadership involves influencing colleagues, advocating for change, and developing a culture of continuous learning (Hollis, 2018). One point of importance, in particular, is the ability to engage in collaborative professional learning, as highlighted by Danielson (2006). Indeed, this is what separates teacher leaders from their peers.

Greatest Hope and Concern about the Future of Teacher Leadership

My greatest hope for the future of teacher leadership is that it becomes a bigger part of every educational institution and that it contributes to the development of empathy in teaching practices (Ackerman & Mackenzie, 2007). I envision a future where teacher leaders are empowered to take charge, influence policy decisions, and contribute significantly to curriculum development. On the other hand, my greatest concern is the potential resistance to change and the undervaluation of teacher leaders' contributions. It is crucial for educational stakeholders to recognize and support the role of teacher leaders in improving student learning outcomes.

Personal Definition of Teacher Leadership

Teacher leadership, in my perspective, is the ability of experienced and skilled teachers to influence their colleagues, advocate for students' needs, and contribute to the improvement of teaching practices and the school environment (Danielson, 2006). It involves taking on additional responsibilities, mentoring new teachers, and actively participating in professional development. Teacher leaders are change agents, committed to fostering a collaborative culture and driving innovation in education.

Plan of Action for Skills and Dispositions Development

To further develop my skills and dispositions as a teacher leader, I plan to:

1. Engage in continuous professional development through workshops, conferences, and online courses, particularly in areas such as collaborative teaching, advanced data analytics, and curriculum design.

2. Seek mentorship training and join a mentorship program to enhance my ability to guide and support new teachers effectively.

3. Actively participate in teacher support groups and practice mindfulness techniques to bolster my resilience in facing the challenges of the teaching profession.

4. Dedicate time to read books on growth mindset, innovation in education, and social-emotional learning to nurture my open-mindedness and empathy.

5. Join the National Council for Teachers of Biology to access tailored professional development resources and networking opportunities.

Potential Research Topic for Action Research Project

Given my commitment to continuous improvement and the insights gained from this course, I am inclined to explore the impact of teacher leadership on student engagement and learning outcomes in biology. This topic aligns with my MSED specialization and presents a challenge that I have control over and can significantly impact P-12 student learning. The research question could be framed as: "How does the implementation of teacher leadership strategies in a biology classroom influence student engagement and learning outcomes?"
