Reflection on Approach
Reflecting on the approach taken with BA, it is clear that a comprehensive strategy was helped in addressing her psychiatric needs. The integration of psychopharmacology and various therapeutic modalities provided a balanced treatment plan. However, in hindsight, there could have been a more proactive approach in involving BA's family from the onset, provided their contact information and relationship status could be verified. Engaging the family early in the treatment process can give additional support and help with the effectiveness of the intervention strategies. Plus, given BAs history of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), a more frequent and in-depth consultation with neurology or neuropsychology specialists might have provided a clearer picture of how her past injuries could be influencing her current psychiatric presentation.
Treatment Plan and Evaluation
The treatment plan for BA was created by taking into account her schizoaffective disorder, suicidal ideations, and delusional beliefs. The combination of Abilify for pharmacological intervention, along with CBT and DBT for psychotherapy, aligned with evidence-based practices for these conditions. However, the success of this plan hinges on BAs adherence to the medication and her active participation in therapy sessions. Continuous evaluation and monitoring of BAs response to the treatment, as well as any potential side effects from the medication, would be required. Also, it would help to make sure that BA has a strong support system in place.
General Recommendations
In moving forward with BAs treatment, it is recommended to maintain the collaborative and multidisciplinary approach that has been initiated. Regular communication with the psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and neurologists involved in BAs care will help with all aspects of her health. Efforts should be made to engage and educate BAs family, as their support could assist in her treatment and recovery. A social worker should also assess BAs living situation to make sure she has a stable environment to return to. And there should be monitoring of BAs medication adherence and response, so adjustments to the treatment plan can be made as needed.
