Early Childhood Education: Trends, Theories, and DAP

Introduction to Early Childhood Education

Early childhood programs are the first source of information and knowledge for young minds that have just begun to explore the world. This is the critical period when a child's brain and thoughts can be steered in any direction, as they are raw and hungry for knowledge. Future development is built on the foundations established at this age, since a strong base supports lifelong learning and healthy social and cognitive development.

Technology as a Transforming Trend

One key trend transforming early childhood programs is the increased use of technology, which has proved especially useful during the COVID-19 pandemic. Children today are already living in a digital age; the previous generation considered television the newest form of technology (National Association for the Education of Young Children, 2012). Now, children are well acquainted with mobile devices, laptops, and tablets, which are increasingly used in schools to support knowledge acquisition and digital familiarity.

Technology provides significant learning potential, enabling play and collaborative growth. In early education settings, digital technology takes the form of virtual games, instructional videos, assessments, active participation in online communities, and access to online content (Murcia, Campbell & Aranda, 2018). However, healthcare professionals have noted that excessive technology use can contribute to obesity, lethargy, and reduced participation in outdoor activities, all of which negatively affect young children's mental health. As a result, early education programs are increasingly developing policies that encourage parents to limit screen time for children aged 2 to 5 years to fewer than two hours per day.

Research has shown that teachers' own familiarity with technology, their confidence in using it, institutional technology policies, and students' socioeconomic status all influence how technology is integrated during the early years (Blackwell, Lauricella & Wartella, 2014). During the pandemic, distance learning became a new norm in early education. The success of this format depends largely on educators' familiarity with Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Using technology to show videos and images in online teaching has become a common strategy for maintaining young students' motivation. Platforms such as Zoom have enabled creative instructional approaches that would not have been possible in traditional classroom settings and have made it possible to teach children from virtually anywhere in the world.

The Cognitive Approach to Learning

The learning approach that best aligns with my educational philosophy is the cognitive approach, which holds that a child's learning is based on knowledge acquisition and retention. Children taught using the cognitive approach — particularly in preschool environments — tend to be more responsible and responsive toward themselves, toward older individuals, and toward their surrounding environments, as they come to understand the world around them in a distinctive way (Kharrazi & Delgoshaee, 2010). This demonstrates that quality programming for young children begins at an early age, as children internalize incoming information in precisely the form in which it is presented to them. A child's development of cognitive and social skills is rapid at this stage and can even positively influence IQ, as reflected in how children interact, socialize, and play with peers both inside and outside the classroom.
