Introduction

Fossil fuels — comprising coal, natural gas, and oil — are formed over millions of years from the remains of living organisms. Most of the world's energy needs are currently supplied by fossil fuels, but they come at a steep price. Fossil fuels are the leading source of global warming emissions worldwide. As Shindell and Smith (2019) note, "The combustion of fossil fuels produces emissions of the long-lived greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and short-lived pollutants, including sulfur dioxide, that contribute to the formation of atmospheric aerosols." Beyond contributing to global warming, fossil fuels also cause serious health problems, release toxins such as mercury, and destroy natural ecosystems. Their overall environmental impact is far greater than that of any other energy source.

The world has relied on fossil fuels for a very long time, leading many people to believe there is no viable alternative. However, with global temperatures rising each year and climate-related events occurring worldwide, people have begun to recognize the environmental damage fossil fuels cause. This recognition has driven a push for cleaner energy. Fossil fuel combustion is the primary contributor to air pollution: worldwide, fossil fuels account for 82% of primary energy supply, and in the United States they account for 81% of all energy supply (Shindell & Smith, 2019). The amounts of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide produced from fossil fuel combustion continue to rise as reliance on these fuels persists. If we are to protect the environment, we must reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and transition toward safe, clean alternatives such as solar and wind energy.

Health Impacts of Air Pollution

Air pollution is the most immediate harm caused by fossil fuels. It affects not only the environment but also the respiratory systems of human beings across the globe. People living in low- and middle-income countries face the greatest risk from air pollution (Perera, 2018). One of the most troubling consequences is the premature death of infants due to toxic air pollutants and climate-related stressors. The young are especially vulnerable because their bodies are still developing and they are biologically more susceptible to environmental harm. Children breathe in more air and require more food relative to their body weight than adults do, meaning they are exposed to proportionally higher levels of pollutants (Perera, 2018).

Children from low-income backgrounds in both developing and developed countries bear the greatest burden. These socioeconomic disparities stem from a documented pattern of disproportionate exposure among the poor. For example, studies conducted in the United States have found that low-income communities experience disproportionately high exposure to particulate air pollution from coal-fired power plants (Perera, 2018). A similar pattern holds for climate change more broadly: it is overwhelmingly the poor who are forced to live in areas most vulnerable to extreme flooding, drought, and other climate impacts.

Conclusion

The world may currently depend on fossil fuels, but diversifying our energy sources is essential if we are to protect the environment. Counterarguments citing other causes of pollution — such as agricultural emissions — do not diminish the fact that fossil fuels remain the single largest contributor to climate change, air pollution, and environmental degradation. The existence of clean, renewable energy sources should be sufficient motivation to adopt them as a path toward environmental recovery.

Fossil fuels cause air pollution that leads to respiratory illness and the premature death of infants. People in low-income communities and developing countries are the most vulnerable, as they often cannot afford to live in less polluted areas. Fossil fuel corporations must be pressured to invest in green technologies and to begin a gradual, responsible transition away from fossil fuel production. The technology exists; what is needed now is the political will and economic incentive to use it.
