Although Skinner formalized the principles of behaviorism into a systematic science, at its core behaviorism rests on a simple "carrot and stick" model: students are punished when they respond incorrectly and rewarded when they produce the desired response. The same logic applies in the workplace, where workers may be docked pay for lateness and rewarded with a bonus for exceeding sales targets.
Skinner used schedules of reinforcement in the form of operant conditioning to train animals to run mazes and push buttons by rewarding them with food for the correct response (positive reinforcement) and/or discouraging negative behaviors with an unpleasant stimulus such as the withholding of food. Reinforcement may be consistent — given every time the behavior is exhibited — or inconsistent, given only occasionally when the desired response is offered. In some instances, behaviors that approximate the eventual target response may be praised and rewarded in order to gradually shape the subject's behavior; this approach is typically used when teaching more complex skills.
In the classroom, teachers cannot give students candy every time a math problem is solved correctly or the class sits quietly. Nevertheless, many behaviorist principles remain evident in everyday teaching practice. Constructivist Theory and the Zone of Proximal Development
Cognitive theories of learning are based on the belief that "knowledge is actively constructed by learners and that any account of knowledge makes essential references to cognitive structures" (Behaviorism, 2011, Teaching guide for graduate instructors). In contrast to behaviorism, constructivist theory holds that students must be the authors of their own individualized process of knowledge acquisition. It stresses "learning how to learn" rather than making the transmission of content the primary focus of schooling. "Teachers help students to construct knowledge rather than to reproduce a series of facts. The constructivist teacher provides tools such as problem-solving and inquiry-based learning activities with which students formulate and test their ideas, draw conclusions and inferences, and pool and convey their knowledge in a collaborative learning environment" (Constructivism as a paradigm for teaching and learning, 2013, Concept to Classroom). Teachers may even allow students to arrive at a wrong answer initially, then ask probing questions that lead the student to recognize the error independently, rather than deploying the negative reinforcement emphasized by behaviorism.
One of the most influential educators in the history of constructivism is Vygotsky, whose theory of the zone of proximal development proposes that "students solve problems beyond their actual developmental level (but within their level of potential development) under adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers" (Constructivism as a paradigm for teaching and learning, 2013, Concept to Classroom). Like behaviorists, Vygotsky acknowledged that learning builds upon past concepts; however, he believed that the learning process should be shaped according to the needs and existing knowledge of each individual student, which may vary considerably and require individualized approaches. Consistent with developmental theory, he did not regard learners as blank slates, arguing instead that prior social influences had a meaningful impact on learning. The sociability of individuals generally carried an innate positive effect, since children can learn a great deal by modeling others in their peer group and beyond. The person who provides this guidance is known as the more knowledgeable other (MKO) and can help the learner move beyond the zone of proximal development (McLeod, 2007). In workplace contexts, this role is often filled by an older, formally designated mentor rather than a classroom teacher.
