For the past ten years I have had the privilege of working in the field of computer science. My most rewarding experiences have been as an educator writing user manuals for both laypersons and specialists, and as an instructor teaching students across a variety of ability levels — from high school students to undergraduates who wish to enter a technical field. My ultimate professional ambition is to use my technological expertise and passion for teaching to design instructional technology materials and curriculum. This will involve using asynchronous web-based and synchronous delivery platforms to create educational material for students who are unable to attend college in a traditional classroom setting, or who wish to enhance their education or professional development through a distance learning format.
Obtaining a PhD in Education Technology with a concentration in instructional and curriculum design through a distance learning program would seem like the ideal way to achieve these ambitions. It would also give me renewed exposure to life as a student and enable me to stay current with the ever-changing field of computer science. I hope to delve deeper into how to effectively manage multimedia projects for students. Since I wish to use my degree to make distance learning more effective, experiencing the program from the point of view of a distance learner would itself add a meaningful experiential component to my education. I chose this particular university because I have heard former students praise it on numerous occasions. I hope to complete my dissertation and the program by 2009.
My undergraduate degree is in Computer Science and my graduate degree is in Electronic Commerce. My chosen specialization will allow me to learn how to better combine effective online teaching techniques with my computer science background. My degree in electronic commerce will also provide additional grounding in marketing online learning experiences to students, and in matching the needs of the customer — in this case, the student — to the product. Furthermore, because many online students are choosing to pursue degrees in my graduate field, I will have additional experience drawing on that knowledge to create effective curricula.
In addition to receiving formal education in these disciplines, I have worked as a teacher and taught high school students academic mathematics and critical thinking. At the college level I have taught computer science and technical math, and I have designed technical curricula for students with varying levels of ability. Most recently, I accepted a contract position with an online college as a Subject Matter Expert for the design of a new Linux Administration course intended for the online environment. Teaching has, although not strictly part of my academic résumé, proved to be an education in itself, as I am always learning from my students. Teaching students at different stages of their academic careers will also be helpful in designing a variety of online tools for students with different learning needs and styles. A good online teaching program is both technically well designed and attentive to the human needs and goals of its students.
