This reflection and evaluation paper examines the personal and professional growth experienced throughout a bachelor's degree program in health and human services. The author draws on a military background that provided foundational skills in leadership, discipline, teamwork, and problem-solving, then traces how coursework in lifelong learning, cultural diversity, communication, and healthcare ethics built upon that foundation. The paper outlines short- and long-term career goals centered on senior care, transformational leadership, and community service, while also addressing the unique aspects of earning an online degree as an adult learner.
It is important to reflect on my education and how it has transformed my life by improving my self-confidence, upgrading my skills, and expanding my opportunities for personal and career success. This reflection and evaluation paper critically analyzes the value of my undergraduate education. I discuss where I was before commencing the program, where I was during the program, and where I expect to be after graduation. In addition to addressing the unique aspects of receiving an online degree, I outline my short-term and long-term goals as they relate to my course of study.
Before I began my studies, I received most of my life skills, professional training, and character development through the American military. The military helped me discover my talents and preferences with regard to a career, and brought out both my strengths and weaknesses. My professional background was grounded in military values and principles such as hard work and discipline. As a hierarchical organization with clear role differentiation, the military provides an ideal preparatory framework for careers in large organizations with similar cultures and structures.
Because I am interested in the field of healthcare, there is a definite crossover between what I witnessed, learned, and practiced in the military and what I will be doing in the future. Learning is a core component of my life, as I am a naturally inquisitive individual who is never satisfied simply hearing or reading a fact. I want to know the meaning behind what I learn, and I want to think critically. My level of professional competence in problem-solving was high, given the degree of responsibility and leadership I held in my military role. Likewise, information retrieval and utilization were daily tasks. Collaboration and teamwork are critical skills for any military professional to cultivate regularly.
Therefore, I began my studies with a solid personal foundation, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude. I was prepared to work hard, apply knowledge, conduct research, communicate effectively, and collaborate with others.
During my program of study, I grew considerably in my ability to apply critical and creative thinking in both my personal and professional life. Before I started this degree program, I did not know much about healthcare management. I also lacked essential knowledge about research methodology and information retrieval. These courses helped me implement evidence-based practice, which is crucial to my intended career. I also learned the importance of problem-solving and strong written and oral communication skills.

"Senior care goals and long-term leadership vision"
My university has offered me a firm foundation for my education and career. I appreciate the instructors and the hard work they have invested in developing courses suitable for adult learners who need to apply skills and training directly to the workplace. With this degree, I will become the qualified professional I envisioned for myself, will continually improve my skills, and will dedicate my career to helping others.
