By acquiring knowledge about racism and how it operates in everyday life of people, whether they are white Americans or not, students, through their educators and experiences, become more aware and hopefully, tolerant, of the differences in values, attitudes, and behavior of people coming from different races and cultures. Social class and the hidden curriculum of work" by Jean Anyon provides a descriptive study of four categories of schools determined through the socio-demographic characteristics of its students. As part of an ethnographic research, Anyon's observations of four types of schools -- working class schools, middle-class schools, affluent professional school, and executive elite school -- illustrate how, as students' social class level goes down from the socio-economic ladder, the kind of learning and education that the students receive correspondingly decreases as well.

A similar scenario is reflected in middle-class schools, wherein although teachers assume a more active role in engaging their students to learn, they also undergo the same mechanical procedure of learning. However, as the socio-economic class of students goes higher, there is apparent difference in the method of teaching students. In the affluent professional school, teachers make sure that students understand the lessons being taught; high regard for the students' participation and opinion is most evident in executive elite school, wherein there is an active exchange between students and their instructor and students assume a more important role in classroom participation than the instructor(s).
