This personal statement outlines a candidate's motivations and qualifications for pursuing a Master of Science in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Drawing on military service in the U.S. Air Force, work with the Kokomo Police Department, and prior academic achievement — including Associate and Bachelor's degrees in Criminal Justice with a 3.50 GPA — the author articulates long-term professional goals in law enforcement and national security. The statement also addresses readiness for graduate-level study, distance learning strategies, and a commitment to justice, discipline, and public service.
An employment announcement in my area of residence first attracted me to criminal justice and homeland security as a professional pursuit. Family involvement and my experience serving in the U.S. Air Force further reinforced that interest. Upon separation from the Air Force, I instilled a discipline that had been lacking in my earlier years, and I decided to build on my interest in law enforcement through higher education. I firmly believe that knowledge is power, and it was through my university studies that this notion truly became real for me. Through that experience, I came to terms with being responsible, motivated, and focused in achieving my long-term goals. As a result, I successfully attained both an Associate degree and a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice — a milestone in shaping my educational and professional future.
I believe that social, economic, and political empowerment depends on the stability of an economy, and that stability is sustained by effective security and state protection. The efforts that the United States Department of Defense carries out are commendable, and my dream has always been to be part of that positive change that keeps our nation strong. Missions such as the capture of former Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and ongoing efforts to curb illegal border crossings from South America have inspired me greatly. Questions such as "How would I feel if I were the head of security in charge of such a mission?" and "How have I contributed to my country's security?" are ones that continue to motivate me.
I have a strong conviction that my vocational, educational, and personal long-term goals can be achieved by pursuing a Master of Science in Criminal Justice. The world is constantly changing, and that change is shaped by the mindset of individuals. I plan to cultivate an intellect that will enable me to engage in fair judicial affairs as part of the global mission of maintaining peace and security. I also want to maintain the patience and discipline I have developed throughout my journey.
I have struggled with education since 1982, having been personally disoriented from academics at times and having enrolled in the wrong academic environments. Despite those challenges — and regardless of the length of the M.Sc. program — I will keep focusing on the bigger picture. The global society highly regards intellectually prepared individuals, and earning a Master's degree with distinction will position me within a respected academic realm while also advancing my standing in society. Vocationally, higher education will open doors to dynamic, senior-level roles in various law enforcement agencies. As a graduate, I intend to bring my educational foundation to policy leaders, scholars, and visionaries across the nation's law enforcement community.
