Q1.The origin of slavery can be traced back to late 1600's in Jamestown in Virginia. In early 1600's the Virginia Company came to America and established the colony of Virginia. In the process of establishing the colony the English settlers also brought with them Portuguese and Dutch traders to help in the establishment of the colony. The English settlers had previously failed in their several attempts to establish a colony but were persistent enough to sees their dream come true. The successful establishment of the colony was later followed by successful trading between the settlers and the locals. In one such incidence that may have most importance was when one trader traded his cargo of African slaves for food.The slaves were first taken in as indentured servants to work in return for freedom, food or land.
The African were given same considerations as poor Englishmen who worked under same contractual agreements. The land in the new settlement was large and the settlers were not enough to take care of the land. This increased the demand of more workers to work on the farms. The African workers were also more resilient than other slaves such as Indians who were often prone to diseases. As a result this increased the demand of African workers. As the demand increased traders became for forceful acquiring...
The success of these farms made land owners to prefer African slave, hence, increasing the number of slaves being brought to America (Buell, 2004).
Q2. Most early settler and land owners had small families and had vast land under their ownership. They were unable to take care of all the land hence creating the demand for slaves. As the settlements developed settlers became accustomed to the notion of slavery. Therefore, owning slaves become the culture of America.Most slaves that were brought to America had nothing else than there slave masters and they would also not be allowed to live freely. Thus, slavery was probably the only option at that time. Furthermore, children born into slavery knew little else apart from slavery and also found themselves living as slave and in some instances settlers passed laws that allowed them to inherit children of slave workers. These traditions African continued to serve as slaves.
Q3. One of the major factors that contribute to racial prejudice and discrimination against African-Americans was the privileges that were given to white American.
